As a result of the Ukrainian Neptune missile strike on the Russian Borisoglebsk airfield on the night of October 15, Russia may have lost more Su-34 fighter-bombers than it received from its own defense industry in the entire year of 2026, Defense Express reports .
According to the Ukrainian Navy, six Su-34 aircraft, which the Russian army uses to launch guided bombs with UMPK systems, were hit during the attack. These munitions pose a threat to Ukrainian positions and frontline areas.
"The destruction of six Su-34s at once exceeds the rate of deliveries of such aircraft to the Russian Aerospace Forces this year," the publication notes. According to Defense Express, the Russian military-industrial complex typically delivers combat aircraft in small batches of two or three. In 2025, Russia announced the delivery of seven batches of Su-34s, totaling 18 aircraft.
At the same time, even based on Russian statements, the occupation army could have received only four or five new aircraft of this type in 2026. Thus, according to the publication's estimates, one Ukrainian strike on the airbase exceeded the total of all known Su-34 deliveries that year.
Meanwhile, Russian air force losses are not limited to the October 15 attack. As Defense Express points out, according to publicly available data, Russia had already lost three Su-34s by that point – destroyed or damaged.
"Consequently, it can be concluded that, after today, the Russian Federation has lost at least nine Su-34s to damage during the current year alone," the publication states. The authors of the article note that such losses are gradually weakening the Russian army's ability to launch guided bomb strikes on frontline areas of Ukraine. As reported, Russia built a new base for launching attack drones in the Rostov region, near the border with Ukraine, in just six weeks.
Satellite images show a complex with launch pads capable of launching Geran-4 and Geran-5 drones, with some of the equipment already installed. Experts believe the base is nearly complete and capable of launching over 100 drones per day, under the protection of Russian air defenses.
