Ukrainian strikes on tech giant Yandex's data centers have thrown key aspects of daily life into chaos for Russians, disrupting services ranging from email and taxi apps to dating sites and even electronic keys for intercoms in Moscow apartment buildings.
Over the past week, Ukraine has severely damaged three of Yandex's six data centers, wreaking havoc in a country whose tech ecosystem is centered around a single, massive, state-linked company, the Financial Times reports . Launched in 1997 as a search engine, Yandex has evolved into Russia's answer to Google, Uber, Amazon, and OpenAI, all at once.
Thousands of businesses depend on its infrastructure, meaning the attacks hit not only Yandex's services, but also many companies unrelated to it. The outages follow a wave of summer strikes on Russian oil refineries that left millions of Russians queuing for hours at gas stations.
Kyiv claimed these attacks were a response to Moscow's strikes on Ukrainian data centers. But the consequences in Russia were far more serious, exposing the weaknesses created by the Kremlin's long-standing desire to centralize and control the IT sector, according to media reports.
Many of these efforts centered around Yandex, which was forcibly sold in 2024 to investors linked to Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin. "Russia has become a victim of its own policies. This has triggered a worst-case scenario," said Alena Epifanova, a research fellow at the German Council on Foreign Relations. Russians struggled to access their Yandex email, open work files, or call a taxi. In some cities, bus stop signs disappeared. Residents of many Moscow apartment buildings found themselves locked out of their shared courtyards because the barriers at the entrances were operated by a single company dependent on Yandex infrastructure, journalists note.
Users of Yandex Pay, the banking and payment service that took off after Apple Pay left Russia, woke up to find their account balances had vanished. Yandex insists their "money is safe." Meanwhile, hundreds of websites are experiencing outages, including Russia's leading dating app, Twinby, and the McDonald's impersonator, Vkusno, Period.
"I lost the website I've had for 10 years. All the databases, photos, reviews—everything is probably gone," said Alena Zhiganova, founder of the travel agency Proadventure. She previously used a cloud service from an American provider, which ceased operation after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Two of them were completely disabled by the attacks, and the third had several modules damaged. The company has not stated how long the repairs will take.
A source close to the company's management stated, without giving a timeframe, that they hope to restore functionality "quickly." This means all services will be operational, but "slightly slower than usual." Returning to "full capacity" will take several months, he added.
As a sign of the seriousness of the situation, the head of the Russian Ministry of Digital Development, Communications, and Mass Media stated that the authorities will "protect these facilities." Putin recently placed responsibility for protecting against drones on the enterprises themselves, urging them not to expect support from the state.
The problems also spread to Russia's neighbors: email, Yandex Pay, and websites using the company's infrastructure were shut down in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus. The impact was particularly severe in Kazakhstan, where Yandex controls over 90% of the market in the country's two largest cities.
