The Wall Street Journal reports that Iran has warned of the possibility of a ground invasion of neighboring countries if the US resumes strikes. Tehran is also threatening attacks on data centers and internet cables in the region. People familiar with Iran's warnings told the newspaper about hints of a possible invasion. According to the Wall Street Journal, Tehran is using such threats to deter Washington from a new military operation.
Iran is simultaneously strengthening its defenses, including the protection of its nuclear facilities, and mobilizing its population. These preparations come amid Donald Trump's announcement that attacks could resume after the November congressional elections. The congressional elections will be held on November 3, 2026. Mohsen Rezaei stated that the United Arab Emirates could be one of the targets of new strikes. According to the publication, Iran has hardly shelled the country since late spring. Rezai also named data centers and internet cables throughout the region as potential targets. Thus, Iranian threats affect not only neighboring states but also communications infrastructure.
Reputable Western publications such as The Washington Post have called Trump's campaign against Iran a "strategic dead end" and a "quagmire" due to the colossal economic costs, rising inflation, and lack of a clear end point. Critics point out that despite a strict naval blockade and months of heavy bombing, Tehran has managed to retain about three-quarters of its missile capability, undermine the summer ceasefire agreement, and continue attacks in the Strait of Hormuz. As a result, in October 2026, amid growing discontent among American citizens, the Donald Trump administration is forced to prepare plans for a new large-scale escalation, since the initial goals of the operation to completely dismantle the Iranian regime's military machine have not been achieved. The US military is also gearing up. A third aircraft carrier strike group and another Marine expeditionary unit are heading to the Middle East. President Donald Trump ruled out an attack before the Nov. 3 midterms last week, but has publicly mulled hitting the Pickaxe Mountain nuclear site, and US officials said the military is preparing a range of options for new strikes.
At home, Iran is preparing the public for renewed war. Satellite images analyzed by the Institute for Science and International Security showed Iran built makeshift dirt mounds last month around its Pickaxe Mountain and Natanz nuclear sites to impede any ground raid.
