First tonight at nine, the FBI on scene
at the Arizona State Capitol's executive tower
after staff members opened an envelope containing white powder.
Sky Fox giving us a look at the scene earlier today
and all of those crews that were outside
the Capitol today. The tower houses offices.
It houses the offices of Arizona Governor Katie
Hobbs, Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes and more.
Fox 10's Taylor Wertz joins us live
now with an update on what you're learning tonight.
Taylor. Mark and Christina, the good
news is DPS tells us the two staff members exposed
to that suspicious white powder have not reported
feeling ill but still no word yet on what that powder actually was.
As you can tell the scene
here at the Capitol has since cleared about two hours ago
though it was a very different scene
all hands on deck with DPS, the FBI,
Phoenix Fire and Hazmat crews all on site. DPS says it
evacuated the executive tower here
at the Capitol after Secretary of State Adrian Fontes says his
office received an envelope filled
with a suspicious white powder that was opened by a
staff member. The office called law enforcement
and hazmat crews who isolated the material and
exposed staff evacuating the building.
While it's not yet known what was in that envelope,
hazmat crews followed protocol dressed in head-to-toe suits.
We saw them walking around
appearing to wipe each other off after leaving the building
and apparently this is not an isolated
incident as the FBI
and Postal Inspection Service say they're investigating a series
of suspicious mailings sent to various offices nationwide.
On Fox 10 Talks tonight, we spoke
with Jonathan Gilliam, a retired Navy SEAL and FBI special agent,
who said sending white
powder in the mail is an old school tactic.
The other thing is that this isn't new age
investigations that's going to happen.
This is old school investigations because you're
using the mail. Yeah. It's not a cybercrime.
Right. So it's gonna be a lot quicker, I would
think, to get to a point where they probably have a suspect
or at least know where this stuff is
coming from. Secretary Fontes condemning
the incident on his social media tonight, saying,
quote, we will not be scared out of doing
our jobs on behalf of the voters of Arizona.
As the election closes in,
we know that threats will continue and we are on high alert to protect
everyone on our team that is working overtime to serve Arizona.
Once we get more information
from law enforcement on what happened here tonight,
we'll be sure to let you know.
Live in the state capitol, Taylor Wertz, Fox 10 News.
