During a Kremlin broadcast, Vladimir Putin lost contact with the participants of a video conference—winners of teaching competitions. In the middle of the conference, Putin's picture first went blank, then the screen where he was watching his interlocutors went dark. After the glitch, Putin began to turn his head and look around, lowering and raising his gaze, pursing his lips. After a few seconds, apparently trying to cover up the awkward silence, he turned his attention to his notepad and began taking notes. The image of his interlocutors on his screen had not yet returned. Russian television channels continued to broadcast the meeting's participants live from the studio—viewers were able to see Putin's interlocutors despite the video link failure on his end.
The cause of the malfunction and the location from which Putin participated in the conference were not reported. 73-year-old Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is finding it increasingly difficult to express his thoughts. At an event celebrating Teacher's Day, he embarrassed himself three times.
The first two embarrassing incidents occurred when the Kremlin leader attempted to recite Fyodor Tyutchev's famous poem, "Russia Cannot Be Understood with the Mind." He couldn't remember all four lines and mispronounced them: he said, "You just have to believe in Russia," instead of the original, "You can only believe in Russia." Putin claimed that Russian schoolchildren "absorbed" this quatrain with their mother's milk. This has already been ridiculed online, with some noting that the Kremlin leader was apparently weaned rather late. The apotheosis of this speech was Putin's attempt to explain the importance of nurturing an intellectual elite. He failed to express his thoughts clearly and said the exact opposite. "We cannot create a situation in which we have an intellectual elite that has been taught to think, and people whose intellectual development is relegated to the background. We absolutely must not allow such a situation. A great deal depends on educators, on teachers!" the Russian dictator said. Online, some believe he unwittingly revealed the truth about his policies toward Russian youth. Evidence of this is the record brain drain from Russia since the 1990s—at least 60,000 scientists have left the country over the past six years. Vladimir Putin regularly finds himself in bizarre and awkward situations during public speeches, meetings, and live broadcasts. Some of these moments become viral memes, demonstrating the contrast between his official television image and reality. Due to heightened security fears in recent years, the Kremlin has built a comprehensive disinformation system to conceal the president's true location. Identical offices have been built in bunkers across Russia.
