Lena Dunham and husband Luis Felber welcome first baby via surrogate

Lena Dunham and her husband, Lewis Felber, have a very special new addition to their family. The couple, who have been married since September 2021, have welcomed their first child, a baby girl, via surrogate, Dunham revealed in a Wednesday op-ed for Vogue. The couple are currently in the States and will soon move to London, where Felber is from. 40-year-old Dunham has been open about her long history of medical issues involving her reproductive system. In 2017, at age 31, she underwent a hysterectomy due to severe endometriosis, a painful condition in which tissue grows outside the uterus. The following year, she had her left ovary removed. At the time, Dunham wrote that the ovary was encased in scar tissue and fibrosis, attached to her bowel and pressing on nerves that made it difficult to walk and urinate. She later described her hysterectomy as both a grief and a relief. Last summer, Dunham told The Times that she and Felber were in the process of expanding their family. She said she wanted to safely meet their children before figuring out how to talk about the process. In April, Dunham also opened up about grieving the possibility of never becoming a mom following her hysterectomy. Speaking on Today with Jenna and Chanel, she said her pain at the time of the surgery was so overwhelming that she initially put those thoughts aside, but in the aftermath, she began to feel the weight of what had happened. Dunham said she had always dreamed of becoming a mother, that it was a big part of her identity. However, she said meeting people who had built their families in many different ways helped her reach a place where she felt really excited about having children her own way. After years of navigating what motherhood might look like for her, Lena Dunham is now stepping into it with her daughter by her side.
