Russia is experiencing another "Black August"; country is hit by severe political and social crises

For several decades now, Russia has experienced dramatic crises at the end of summer, which is why this month is often called "Black August," according to an analysis by journalist Nathan Hodge for CNN .

He recalled the August events of the last few decades. In particular, the failed coup attempt in the late Soviet Union, when radical communists attempted to oust Mikhail Gorbachev as president of the USSR. Ultimately, this led to the collapse of the Union. In August 1998, a financial crisis began in Russia, causing a default and the collapse of the ruble. And in August 1999, the second Chechen war began, which "brought an unknown politician, former KGB officer Vladimir Putin, to the highest positions." Under Putin, in August 2008, Russia launched a war with Georgia and occupied Ossetia and Abkhazia.

In the context of the war with Ukraine, he writes, this summer is shaping up to be a grim one for Putin's Russia: occupation forces are making little progress, and factories and warehouses are burning more and more frequently across Russia. Meanwhile, gasoline lines and rumors of a new wave of mobilization are fueling public discontent. In his seemingly confident address, Putin even acknowledged the damage from Ukrainian attacks on warehouses. But he tried to downplay its significance and promised to restore them at government expense.

Does this mean that August has also been "black" for Russia, the author asks. He cites the opinions of Russian opposition figures who acknowledge that Russia is in crisis due to fuel shortages, the falling currency, and the upcoming elections.

Interestingly, a popular tabloid's astrological forecast section listed August as the month in which a lunar eclipse is expected to occur during the phase of the planet Pluto, which is associated with catastrophes.

The author also recalled that this month, Lev Schlossberg, a Russian opposition politician from the Yabloko party, the only one to advocate for peace, was sentenced to 11 years in prison. The sentence was based on his activities promoting peace with Ukraine. He concludes that Putin continues to stifle the opposition, and does so more openly following the death in prison of Alexei Navalny, who was poisoned with Novichok—also in August 2020.

As a reminder, Andrey Klepach , chief economist at Vnesheconombank, Russia's second-largest bank, was fired for declaring that Russia could not win a "war of attrition" and that it could lead to a social crisis. Klepach stated that Russia's military economy was stagnating due to high defense spending, strict monetary restrictions, sanctions, and attacks from Ukraine.

It should be added that, according to observers, Ukraine is currently in a better position than at any time since the fall of 2022. Meanwhile, Ukraine continues its systematic attacks on Russian territory and has already disabled a third of Russia's oil refining capacity and destroyed most of the Wildberries warehouses. Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to kill over 30,000 Russian soldiers on the front lines, which exceeds the number of new recruits for the occupying forces.
