Russian military personnel are recruiting HIV-infected soldiers for combat missions at the front, even despite medical examinations concluding that they are unfit for service. This was reported by the intelligence service of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense.

The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense released an audio recording of a conversation between a Russian serviceman.

According to intelligence, this refers to the 1st separate motorized rifle brigade of the Russian army, operating in the Pokrovsky direction.

As the Main Intelligence Directorate noted, the Russian citizen was diagnosed with HIV. Without the necessary medication, this disease can lead to complications. However, back in February, a military medical commission declared the occupier unfit for service.

Despite this, he continued to be involved in combat missions. According to intelligence, Russian command also declared the soldier a deserter.

"The occupier has HIV, which can lead to complications without the necessary medication. Furthermore, back in February, a medical commission declared him unfit for service, but this did not prevent him from being deployed for combat missions," the Ministry of Defense press service reported.

The occupier himself, in an intercepted conversation, says that he was discharged by decision of the military medical commission, but did not wait for the final decision, and therefore it was filed with the Special Administrative Department - unauthorized abandonment of the unit.

The Main Intelligence Directorate stated that this indicates problems with medical care and the treatment of military personnel in the Russian army.

Intelligence also noted that the involvement of military personnel previously deemed unfit for military action in assault operations creates additional risks for the Russian army itself. Though Russian state media outlets have only just begun speaking openly of a “looming epidemic” of disease on the frontlines, chronic illnesses have long been a part of everyday life in the Russian military. In order not to miss out on the lucrative enlistment bonuses they are owed by the state, soldiers often conceal their diagnoses, while infection rates in the trenches continue to rise and military hospitals lack basic medications and even sterile syringes. Professional soldiers or reservists who have been formally mobilised are now a minority in the Russian military, according to Yevgeny Rybakov*, a Russian army doctor who works with wounded soldiers. Rybakov told Novaya Europe that a significant portion of the Russian army’s ranks is now made up of former convicts, drug addicts, and individuals from other socially marginalised groups, few of whom enlisted out of patriotism, but rather to escape debt, prosecution or prison.
