Tehran is preparing responses to a possible escalation of the war by the Donald Trump administration and is exploring the possibility of attacks on American military facilities in Europe. The Financial Times reports this. According to the publication, Iranian leadership is considering expanding the geography of retaliatory strikes if Washington launches a new offensive or significantly intensifies its military campaign. The focus is on American military installations in Southeastern Europe. Bulgaria is mentioned among potential targets. Last month, Sofia approved the use of Bezmer Air Base by US Air Force tankers. Cyprus is also on the list of potentially vulnerable targets. As the newspaper notes, a British military facility on the island was already attacked by a drone in March. The publication also writes that Tehran's military plans are not limited to potential strikes against US targets in European countries. Furthermore, Iran is considering the destruction of undersea fiber-optic cables laid in the Strait of Hormuz. Such an attack could create additional problems for communications and data transmission in the strategically important region. The newspaper notes that such scenarios reflect the mood within the Iranian leadership. In Tehran, more and more regime officials view the resumption of large-scale hostilities not as an unlikely scenario, but as a matter of time.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Washington could announce measures as early as next week that would be unprecedented in their scale and economic isolation of Tehran. Analysts suggest that the American side could "cross the Rubicon" and begin pressuring the international financial networks that allow Tehran to continue exporting oil, Radio Liberty writes .
Experts cite Chinese banks, yuan-denominated settlements, and intermediaries that facilitate Iran's trade with foreign buyers as potential targets. China remains one of the key buyers of Iranian oil, and a significant portion of settlements are conducted in currencies other than the dollar, including the Chinese yuan. Therefore, a potential strategy for Washington could be to target Chinese financial institutions involved in such transactions. Elaine Dezenski, director of the Center on Economic and Financial Power at the US-based Foundation for Defense of Democracies, says that particular attention could be paid to financial centers such as Hong Kong, as well as banks involved in transactions with sanctioned Iranian oil. Another option would involve a section of the Patriot Act that would allow Washington to potentially designate certain Iranian oil deals denominated in Chinese yuan as directly related to money laundering. Brett Erickson, a sanctions expert at the American company Obsidian Risk Advisors, believes that the introduction of sanctions against Chinese banks would mean reaching a new level of escalation. He said the Treasury Department had long known it had such leverage but had avoided using it because of the potential knock-on effects on the US and the global financial system.
