The German newspaper Die Welt reported unusually high NATO military air activity in the Kaliningrad region. This occurred amid growing tensions with Russia and concerns that the Kremlin could escalate tensions on the Alliance's eastern flank. According to OSINT analysts, several key NATO and US aircraft were simultaneously in the skies near the Kaliningrad region: an E-3 AWACS airborne early warning and control aircraft, an American EA-37B Compass Call II electronic warfare aircraft, and an ARTEMIS II reconnaissance aircraft belonging to the US Army.
E-3 AWACS and ARTEMIS II flights in this region are not uncommon. But it was the simultaneous presence of the latest EA-37B electronic warfare aircraft that caught the attention of observers. They believe this combination may indicate a particular need for US and NATO reconnaissance or electronic warfare in the Kaliningrad region.
A NATO spokesman confirmed that US and Norwegian fighter jets, Polish ground forces, an E-3A AWACS airborne surveillance and control aircraft, and other units were involved in the operation. He added that the operation was led by the US.
So, NATO conducted a planned air exercise above northeastern Poland near Russia's Kaliningrad region. The exercise involved US and Norwegian fighter jets, a NATO E-3A Sentry AWACS surveillance aircraft, aerial-refueling tankers and a US EA-37B electronic-warfare aircraft. Estimates of the number of aircraft involved ranged from about 25 to 50. Poland's Operational Command said the exercise was coordinated by NATO and was unrelated to Russian air force activity. The operation was intended to strengthen interoperability among allied forces and practice joint air-operation scenarios, according to the command. The exercise came days after the Bild newspaper in Germany reported details of what it described as a NATO Land Warfighting Concept for responding to a possible Russian attack on the Baltic states. The reported concept includes potential strikes against missile and air-defense systems in the Kaliningrad region. NATO has increased military exercises around the strategically important Suwalki Gap, a narrow stretch of territory connecting Poland and Lithuania between Kaliningrad and Belarus. The Kaliningrad region is traditionally considered one of the most militarized Russian enclaves in Europe, housing air defense systems, missile systems, and other military infrastructure capable of threatening Poland, Lithuania, the Baltic states, and NATO communications. Therefore, any unusual activity by Alliance aircraft near the region is perceived as a signal to Moscow.
"There's a significant concentration of air forces around Kaliningrad. One can only hope Russia got the message," commented Carlo Masala, a military expert at the Bundeswehr University.
Analysts call the incident a direct warning to the Kremlin. Amid discussions of NATO's contingency plans for a possible Russian invasion of the Baltics, the Alliance is demonstrating not just abstract statements, but a concrete readiness to act against Kaliningrad as a key military hub in the region: AWACS is monitoring the air situation, ARTEMIS II is collecting intelligence, EA-37Bs are conducting electronic warfare, and fighter jets and ground units are completing the overall picture.
