On the night of August 12, the Defense Forces struck several targets in Novorossiysk . Among the targets were two Project 11356R guided-missile frigates: Admiral Makarov and Admiral Essen. There is currently no official information on the strike's aftermath. However, Defense Express analysts analyzed satellite images published by George Barros, an expert at the Institute for the Study of War, and concluded that both guided-missile frigates were successfully hit in the vicinity of their missile silos.
It was noted that in addition to the Kalibr launcher, the launch systems of the Shtil anti-aircraft missile system were also hit. Experts believe that the Defense Forces were most likely attempting to detonate the missiles with these strikes. However, given that this did not occur, the launch silos were likely empty.
Despite this, analysts note that the attack resulted in deformation of the ship's metal structures. This, in all likelihood, means the ship will need to undergo a full overhaul, as without it, it will be unable to launch either cruise missiles or anti-aircraft missiles. "And these launchers are not at all simple, primitive designs, as they might seem at first glance. Replacing them, especially if the entire upper deck needs to be repaired, may require the use of a ship repair yard," analysts note.
It is noted that Project 11356R frigates of the Russian Black Sea Fleet have traditionally been repaired at the Sevmorzavod shipyard in Sevastopol. Specifically, the Admiral Essen underwent scheduled repairs there in 2019, and the Admiral Makarov in 2021. Furthermore, the Admiral Essen underwent repairs at this facility during a full-scale war, in July 2022, after being damaged by a Neptune missile strike. The Admiral Makarov was also spotted being towed near this shipyard in September 2023.
"Thus, Russia now faces a dilemma: attempt to repair both frigates in Novorossiysk, if that's even possible without the necessary equipment. Or send them to occupied Sevastopol, exposed to even closer Ukrainian attacks. Or leave them as they are," the experts add.
As a reminder, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Defense Forces struck Novorossiysk with Palyanitsa jet drones, Neptune missiles , and naval unmanned systems. In addition to the navy, oil and grain terminals in the city were also reportedly hit.
Commenting on this attack, Acting Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara stated that Russia was effectively powerless against the synchronized operation of Ukrainian weapons . He also added that Ukraine would continue to carry out strikes to force Russia to make peace.
