The Ukrainian missile and drone attack on the port of Novorossiysk on August 12, was surprisingly successful. Not only the port facilities but also numerous aggressor warships were hit, according to the Ukrainian OSINT projects Exilenova+ and Cyberboroshno.
"One of the most successful attacks by the Ukrainian Defense Forces on one of Russia's most heavily defended cities," analysts report.
Based on available data, OSINT analysts determined that grain and fuel oil terminals in Novorossiysk were hit that night, among other things. Satellite imagery shows extensive damage to grain storage facilities and transport infrastructure, particularly elevators.
It was reported that the NKHP terminal, which accounts for approximately 12% of Russian grain exports, was damaged. Two other terminals—NZT and KSK—were undamaged, according to satellite imagery. However, the results of the strike on the Russian Navy base in Novorossiysk were far more interesting. According to Osinter, the following ships and vessels were likely hit: Project 11356R frigate Admiral Makarov – damage in the area of the Kalibr missile launchers, as well as the rear superstructure with radar systems; Project 11356R frigate Admiral Essen – damage in the area of the Kalibr launchers; Project 266M minesweeper; research vessel of project 20360 OS "Viktor Cherokov"; unidentified patrol ship of Project 22160; Project 864 reconnaissance ship "Priazovye" - possible damage to the stern; unidentified dry cargo ship. A hit on the coastal infrastructure of the 4th Submarine Brigade was also recorded.
Additionally, the Sheskharis oil export terminal in Novorossiysk was hit during the attack that night. According to analysts, the terminal's main berths, which service large Aframax and Suezmax tankers, were hit.
An unidentified Aframax tanker was likely hit. Satellite images show traces of fire, significant amounts of fire foam, and oil slicks in the water.
As reported, the Krasnodar Krai was hit by a massive attack by hundreds of drones. Novorossiysk suffered the most, with raids and fires at the port, the oil terminal, and near the Russian Navy docking area. Governor Kondratyev reported that Anapa, Gelendzhik, and the Temryuk district were also hit.
President Zelenskyy subsequently confirmed that the Ukrainian Defense Forces attacked a naval base in the port of Novorossiysk, over 300 kilometers from the front , on the night of August 12. He stated that Palyanitsa drones, Neptune missiles, and naval unmanned systems were used against the targets, with hits confirmed on air defense systems, berths, and port infrastructure.
