On the night of August 12, Ukrainian drones attacked strategic targets in Russia's Krasnodar Krai, including Novorossiysk. Numerous drone strikes and fires were recorded in the port city. According to the Krasnodar Krai Operational Headquarters, several hundred Ukrainian UAVs participated in the attack on strategic targets in the region. It is claimed that "UAV debris fell on four enterprises" and several residential buildings.
Ukrainian defense forces attack only military and strategic targets on Russian territory, while Russian anti-aircraft missiles often hit homes because their shelf life has expired or is approaching its end. Numerous photographs and videos posted online show Russian air defense strikes on residential buildings in Novorossiysk.
Residents of Novorossiysk are perplexed by the "operations" of Russian air defense systems, which are no match for Ukrainian long-range UAVs. Fires have been reported in various parts of the city. On the night of August 12, Ukrainian drones attacked a seaport in Novorossiysk, specifically a grain elevator. Grain is loaded onto seagoing vessels for export through this facility. Russia spends the proceeds from grain exports on continuing its war against Ukraine. Furthermore, this is a response to the Russian occupation army's attempted blockade of Ukrainian seaports.
Russian authorities said Ukraine’s overnight bombardment of the western Krasnodar region killed two people and injured at least 12.
Andrei Kravchenko, mayor of the Russian city Novorossiysk, said the attack killed one child and injured eight people. Drone debris damaged four businesses and 21 residential buildings, including apartment blocks, he said. Krasnodar Krai regional governor, Veniamin Kondratyev, said on his Telegram channel that more buildings were damaged elsewhere in the region, killing one man and injuring four people.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the attack but insisted that Kyiv’s forces had targeted the naval base in Novorossiysk, which he called “the last major stronghold of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea.”
“Our Palianytsia jet-powered drones, Neptune missiles, and unmanned naval systems successfully struck the designated targets. Hits on air defense positions, piers, and seaport infrastructure have been confirmed,” wrote Zelenskyy on X.
“The occupation fleet and all the infrastructure supporting it will not be safe as long as Russian aggression continues,” he warned Moscow. Moscow has stepped up its missile attacks on Ukraine in recent months, killing dozens of Ukrainian civilians, while Kyiv has hit back at Russian targets, including oil refineries and warehouses belonging to Russian e-commerce giant Wildberries.
