Mad Max at sea: Russia ties tankers with nets to prevent drone attacks

Russian oil tankers and port terminals are being equipped with nets and cages to protect against Ukrainian drones. A video recorded by shipping analyst Yörük Isık shows a tanker leaving the Black Sea through the Bosphorus with anti-drone nets and stacked water tanks suspended from the sides of the vessel, according to the Financial Times .
Anti-drone nets and metal cages have become an important protective layer on land during the war in Ukraine, but until recently they had not been seen at sea. Images from the Caruzo show the side of the ship's bridge covered in netting, and its roof covered in cages.
"There's nothing in the Mad Max films that can top this," said Isik, who heads the Istanbul-based consultancy Bosphorus Observer. He added that another sanctioned tanker, the Rizwel, is also sailing in the Sea of Marmara and is covered with nets.
"Over the past two months, Ukraine has carried out one of the most intense attacks on shipping ever seen, targeting Russian vessels in the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea in an attempt to cut off Russian oil supplies," the FT recalled.
The attacks caused such chaos that US Vice President J.D. Vance asked Kyiv to stop the strikes near the Caspian Pipeline Consortium terminal in the Russian port of Novorossiysk in order to protect the interests of major American oil companies.
"The protective structures on the ships appeared more improvised than those used on land in Ukraine, where some vehicles are covered with complex metal cages with spikes," the report notes. The Black Sea is known to be a key route for Russian oil exports, as well as Ukrainian grain, which has become a target of Moscow in response to the massive attacks.
"Recent incidents have forced a significant number of shipowners to take a wait-and-see approach rather than take additional risks," said Sheel Bhattacharjee, head of European freight rates at Argus.
In particular, in the port of Novorossiysk, satellite images, as well as photos and videos from open sources, have recorded nets and other fortifications installed around the naval base where the Black Sea Fleet is stationed, as well as the approaches to the harbor.
"Images of the base taken by Airbus satellites show large netting frames, as well as locks and barges, parked across the entrance to the military harbor to block access from the sea – a protective measure in place since March 2024," the publication explained.
Recall, Russia complained of a grain shortage due to the Ukrainian attacks on Novorossiysk. Specifically, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that Ukrainian attacks on the country's grain and agricultural infrastructure were allegedly leading to a rise in global food prices.
"It's clear that the Kyiv regime's cynical military campaign, aimed at fomenting chaos in the global food market, ... serves the interests of certain Western states. All of this exacerbates grain and fertilizer shortages, contributes to rising global food prices, and increases the burden on countries in the Global South and East, which are becoming hostages to the irresponsible policies of these 'players,'" the press secretary emphasized.
