Russia may indeed deploy infantry troops from North Korea to storm Ukrainian territory.
This assumption was made by Ivan Stupak, a military expert who served in the Security Service of Ukraine from 2004 to 2015, commenting on the emergence of a video showing North Korean military personnel conducting joint exercises with Russians.
"Russia and North Korea are left with a taste of success. In 2024, North Korea helped them very effectively by sending its special forces. We initially underestimated them. But they were truly motivated and didn't surrender. They really did cause us trouble and even learned to shoot down our drones using the strategy: one distracts, two shoot. All this led to Russia and North Korea beginning to view this cooperation as positive and, therefore, possible for continuation," Stupak told Unian.
He added that Russia likely promised North Korea something again in exchange for Pyongyang sending an additional contingent of its special forces. The expert noted that after intense fighting in the Kursk region, Russia did not deploy North Korean troops in infantry assaults against Ukraine. "They could potentially become the tip of the spear that will advance into the Chernihiv region. Regarding the Chernihiv region, there's a threat of occupying 100-200 square kilometers and creating tension. They could potentially appear there. But our military has also become adept at using drones over the past two years. Therefore, it won't be a cakewalk for North Korean soldiers. After all, almost 6,000 Ukrainian drones, FPV drones alone, take to the air every day. Therefore, the strategy they used to shoot down these drones will no longer work," Stupak noted.
When asked whether North Korean soldiers would be seen on other parts of the front, Stupak replied:
"From the Russian command's perspective, they could be deployed in the Chernihiv region. Perhaps a little in the Sumy or Kharkiv regions. But to throw them into assaults somewhere in the Donetsk region... There are currently 720,000 Russian troops on Ukrainian territory. It seems to me that it would be more practical to deploy them somewhere new. But, of course, it all depends on the Russian command—whatever they decide."
Commenting on the video itself, which shows North Korean soldiers alongside Russians, the expert noted the location where it was filmed: "They're standing in a dugout. It's unclear in what region or at what time this was filmed. But I have a feeling that if they're standing in a dugout, it's unlikely to be a peaceful region. That is, not Vladivostok or Magadan, but somewhere as close as possible to the demarcation line. Perhaps 100-20 kilometers away, where security measures would still be necessary."
