Getting to the so-called "zero ground" on the front line is significantly more difficult and dangerous today than simply being there. Ukrainian soldiers have to carefully plan every step of their movements, Business Insider reports, citing a Ukrainian sergeant with the call sign "Yanki."
According to the military man, advancing to forward positions requires constant coordination with other units. As the sergeant explains, even a short movement can end in tragedy if it's not coordinated with allied forces or if enemy activity isn't taken into account.
"Every single step has to be coordinated. Every 200 meters or so—every step, because otherwise it puts you in danger," Yankee emphasized. The publication notes that such coordination is necessary not only to defend against Russian attacks but also to prevent attacks from one's own forces. The military must be confident they won't be mistaken for the enemy and receive cover while advancing.
"Getting to that zero line is like Mission Impossible," he said.
Business Insider explains that "zero" is the most dangerous place on the front. The skies above are constantly monitored by reconnaissance and attack drones, and Russian troops regularly attempt infiltration. Even moving a few hundred meters can be a matter of life and death, so Ukrainian units are often forced to wait for favorable weather and electronic warfare support, sometimes for as long as a week.
The publication also mentions the so-called "kill zone," which, according to Ukrainian officials, could extend up to 50 kilometers on either side of the "zero line" in some areas. Due to the large number of drones, any movement can be instantly detected, significantly complicating the delivery of personnel to forward positions. As the publication notes, to improve interunit coordination, the Ukrainian army is implementing the Delta digital battlefield management system. It allows for visibility of forces' positions, coordination of their actions, and reduction of the risk of errors during combat operations, which is critical in modern warfare.
Recall, Ukrainian artillery crews are on track to have access to extended-range shells by the end of the summer — a high-tech tool Kyiv hopes will drastically expand the frontline “kill zone.”
The first wave of deliveries will stretch 155mm cannons’ range to at least 60 kilometers and include laser-guided shells, Ukraine has said. More advanced munitions equipped with small ramjets could more than double that distance. All the shells will be compatible with existing 155mm artillery batteries.
