Attacks on Wildberries are more painful than the oil refinery: unexpected conclusion

Ukrainian defense forces struck several targets in Russia, damaging an oil refinery in the Saratov region, the Engels airfield, which Russia uses for airstrikes in Ukraine, and a duty warehouse for the Wildberries marketplace, this time in the village of Novosemkino in the Samara region. Although the marketplace is not technically a military target, analyst Vitaly Pornikov explains why such strikes could prove to be among the most damaging for the Russian economy—and, ultimately, for the Kremlin's ability to finance the war.
Another Wildberries marketplace is on fire in Russia. This time, it's in the village of Novosemkino in the Samara region. This is just one of the facilities struck by Ukrainian defense forces last night. Problems were also reported at an oil refinery in the Saratov region and a fire at the Engels airfield, which the Russians use for airstrikes in Ukraine.
But despite the fact that the Wildberries marketplace is not formally a military facility and is not connected to Russia's oil refining complex, it is arguably one of the most important assets helping the Russian economy survive sanctions and Putin continue the war.
“We must understand that when Russia strikes Ukraine in what it calls "retaliation"—say, on the warehouses of Nova Poshta or Rozetka—these strikes actually began long before the attacks on Wildberries. They certainly create real problems for these companies, for people waiting for shipments, and for Ukrainian businesses in general. But these aren't strikes that deplete the Ukrainian economy to such an extent that we wouldn't be able to resist Russian aggression.
Why? Because the Ukrainian economy today is dependent on the life support of Western aid. Without this aid, Ukraine would have long since lost the ability to resist aggression. Let's recall how devastating Russian attacks on our economy were back in 2022—it's now 2026, and there's no doubt that in 2027, Ukraine will still have the economic capacity to combat the consequences of aggression, as EU aid has already been approved and, if necessary, will continue”, expert says.
In Russia, the situation is different. Marketplaces like Wildberries act as a kind of "lung" for the country's economic development under sanctions—development that allows Putin to look to the future and plan for war years in advance. In a situation where civilized payments are impossible, and Western sanctions have effectively halted the operation of Russian banks as traditional financial institutions, it is marketplaces that are becoming the "normalizers" of Russia's economic life.
They create the very tax cushion that allows the authorities to plan enormous military budgets and be confident that the army will continue to receive the necessary funding and that its development will remain a priority. Simply put: without money, the army will have no capacity.
Those who believe that Putin will "definitely find money for war," sacrificing Russians' social stability, are mistaken. To finance the war, the Russian economy must be reduced to a state where there is no money left even for the basic survival of the average Russian—who, moreover, ceases to interest the government, since they stop paying taxes and become nothing but beggars. Then there will be no money for the survival of the population, nor for the army and its aggressive actions.
This is what can truly stop Russia in its aggression against Ukraine and its plans for other neighboring countries. Plans for a protracted war and expansion into Central Europe and the Baltics are on Putin's table right now.
