Moscow is preparing for the blackout: Ukraine will destroy the 500 kV and 220 kV Moscow power grids as winter approaches. Therefore, the government has already banned cryptocurrency mining in Moscow and the Moscow region. Russian economist Vyacheslav Shiryaev writes about this in his blog. The ban will take effect on August 15, 2026. This decree was signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. Previously, the mining ban was in effect in 13 energy-deficient regions, including the annexed territories of Ukraine, the North Caucasus republics, and regions in southeastern Siberia. The load on the power grid from miners is an additional risk factor for a blackout should substations around Moscow be destroyed. And those substations are very important there. High-voltage gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) for 500 kV, 220 kV, and 110 kV has been installed in the capital region. These are not transformers, which the Russian Federation can manufacture itself if necessary. They are complex products, individually designed for the unique electrical circuit of a substation and the conditions of the power system. Even China hasn't mastered the production of similarly reliable equipment, despite having the necessary capacity. And other countries won't give Moscow anything. The problem lies in the superfluidity of sulfur hexafluoride gas and a number of other factors. So, there will simply be nothing to replace the KREUs destroyed by Ukraine. A large number of substations in other regions of the Russian Federation have also been converted to similar equipment, so strikes by the Ukrainian Armed Forces would quickly disrupt the country's unified power grid, halt trains, and slow the delivery of equipment, ammunition, and provisions to the front. The Russian government is well aware of what awaits the country in the fall, but no one intends to warn the population and businesses. The Ministry of Energy is aware of the problems with the grid's capacity and stability, which require maintaining a balance between generation and consumption. Otherwise, the lights will go out in dozens of regions. After all, the grid is a single entity that instantly senses changes and requires restructuring, if possible. Otherwise, it could disintegrate into separate "energy islands," and then lead to a complete blackout. Due to desynchronization, nuclear power plant units could be shut down by their own automatic protection systems. It turns out the Kremlin is always well aware of where Ukraine will strike. And the offers to WB sellers a week before the warehouse strikes are far from coincidental. Just like the mining ban in the Moscow region. They understand, but they can't do anything about it, other than issue more bans and denials of responsibility.
