As the destruction of Russian military logistics in annexed Crimea and occupied southern Ukraine proceeds – at sea and on land – media analyzes the results of the various stages of the Ukrainian Defense Forces operation. What enabled Ukraine to launch a massive attack on Russian military logistics facilities? Why is Russia unable to protect its ships in the Black and Azov Seas? How are Russian authorities attempting to ensure supplies to the Crimean Peninsula via Chonhar and Henichesk?

The naval phase of the Ukrainian operation to eliminate Russian military logistics has already yielded tangible results. According to Robert Brovdi , Commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' Security Service, the number of vessels destroyed has exceeded two hundred. Ukrainian and SBU unmanned aerial vehicles are disabling tankers and bulk carriers belonging to the "shadow fleet," as well as other Russian vessels in both the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea. Since the start of the naval operation on July 6, the Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Force and the Security Service of Ukraine have reported destroying hundreds of units of Russia's shadow fleet. The operation of so-called small and medium courier tankers has been paralyzed; they are unable to transport petroleum products from Russian bases and terminals via the Volga-Don Canal and the Sea of Azov to larger tankers, notes Robert Brovdi, Commander of the Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Force. This has also limited the delivery of scarce gasoline to annexed Crimea through the narrow passage of the Sea of Azov. The actions of the Ukrainian Defense Forces in the waters of the Azov and Black Seas have already made world military history, according to expert Andriy Klymenko , co-founder of the Institute of Black Sea Strategic Studies and editor-in-chief of the BlackSeaNews portal . Andrey Klimenko points out that the ships are attacked with the aim of disabling them, not sinking them.

"Everyone loses either the wheelhouse and all its equipment, or, in technical terms, the rudder propeller assembly—that is, the rudder and propellers—which causes the tanker to lose propulsion. Why is this the case? Because we understand that we will have to live on the shores of this sea—both the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. We recognize the scale of the enormous damage already inflicted on our waters: dolphins are dying, the fauna is changing, and water quality is deteriorating. Recovery will take decades. That's why this tactic has been chosen—to minimize the environmental damage to our own seas," the expert notes. The number one task is to stop Russia's maritime logistics, Pavel Laktionov, deputy commander of the 414th "Nemesis" brigade, emphasized in an interview with Krym.Realii .

"The means we use to destroy naval targets allow us to block maritime logistics. And that's our primary goal. Maritime logistics must be stopped. We don't need to sink every tanker and bulk carrier carrying oil products or other cargo in the Sea of Azov. Our goal is to block transshipment. Therefore, I will say it again to the enemy: we know everything—what, who, and where, as well as the types of vessels; we know where to strike; our pilots are well-versed, and tactics for employing all our means have been honed. We know where to strike, and we strike precisely," Pavel Laktionov emphasized. Over the past two months, Ukraine has launched more than 120 strikes on power facilities in the occupied territories. In fact, 50% of these strikes were carried out in annexed Crimea, according to French Osinter Clément Molin . Strikes are targeting both Crimean substations and power centers, as well as large power plants. The Balaklava Thermal Power Plant is the second of Crimea's two largest power plants. Ukrainian special forces claim that the cooling system of the plant's turbine has been damaged. The "land corridor" to Crimea for the Russian army is currently paralyzed. The Atesh guerrilla movement claims that Russian command has ordered military convoys to be mixed with civilian traffic on the land corridor to reduce the risk of drone strikes.
