War propagandists in Russia effectively accused the Kremlin of betrayal due to the conditions Russia accepted to participate in the Olympic Games. Nearly five years after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Putin's government acknowledged that the territories it seized are Ukrainian . Politico reports this , commenting on the Russian Olympic Committee's or ROC agreement not to include "sports organizations" from the occupied territories of Ukraine, which tentatively clears the way for Russia to participate in the Olympic Games. At the very least, the International Olympic Committee has reinstated the ROC's rights.
This decision was called a "diplomatic victory" in Moscow, but the "ultra-patriots" nurtured by the Kremlin regime itself considered the Kremlin's actions a betrayal. "While Russia trumpeted its major diplomatic victory and the IOC sparked international outrage with its decision, what Moscow quietly agreed to in order to achieve its victory attracted far less attention – the quiet renunciation of what Moscow considers 'sovereign territory,'" the author writes. The publication, in particular, cites a statement by the well-known Z-war correspondent Dmitry Steishin, who accused the ROC of abandoning the occupied territories that the Kremlin regime "inscribed" into its constitution. "The Russian Olympic Committee ceded part of the country's territory just to have a good time at the Olympics," Steshin wrote. In turn, military blogger Dmitry Konanykhin writes that the Russian Olympic Committee refused to support sports in the occupied territories. "So, the Russian Olympic Committee has confirmed in writing its refusal to support sports in Donetsk, Luhansk, and Crimea? So what is the much-touted 'victorious' position of Comrade Degtyarev, the Russian Minister of Sport?" he asks. Meanwhile, the Telegram channel InfoWar called the ROC's decision "sabotage and subversive activity at the state level." "This is an act of collaboration with the enemy and subversive activity against the state. This is not the Russian Olympic Committee, but a committee of traitors ," the statement reads. Politico notes that the Kremlin has always viewed sport as a crucial tool of "soft power" on the international stage, but now, amid the war with Ukraine, it is forced to make these kinds of compromises with international organizations to ensure Russian athletes' access to competitions.
Earlier, Russian authorities have publicly acknowledged that Moscow deceived the International Olympic Committee to secure the return of Russian athletes to international competitions. In an interview with pro-Kremlin propagandist Vladimir Solovyov, Russian Sports Minister and head of the Russian Olympic Committee Mikhail Degtyarev openly stated that Russians have no intention of ceasing their activities in the occupied territories of Ukraine. According to him, the ROC continues to operate "throughout the entire territory of Russia, which is enshrined in the constitution."
"Therefore, all of this is nonsense, lies, and a provocation," the minister of the aggressor country stated, commenting on claims that the ROC had withdrawn from the occupied territories of Ukraine. He added that the exclusion of the so-called "Olympic councils" from the occupied territories of Ukraine from the ROC is connected with the reform of the Olympic councils in the Russian Federation. "Crimea is ours. Novorossiya is ours. The Olympic Committee has brought its organizational structure into line," said the occupying state's minister.
