You know, this is all about exercising your right to vote
and making sure that you're not intimidated or harassed.
Take a look at this. It's called election protection.
The CEO of the NAACP in St. Clair Shores today knocking
on doors to encourage people to get out and vote.
But once voters get to their polling sites, the NAACP wants
to make sure eligible voters can cast their ballots freely and safely.
This additional push I think is important.
We can have a strong early vote count, but if we don't have
same-day voters to go out, the election will go for naught.
We have phone bankers, poll watchers, canvassers,
an election protection program happening here.
So there's a lot of work that the Detroit branch is doing.
Back out here live, a group called Detroit Action.
They actually partnered with the NAACP.
Take a listen to what they encountered here at Bagley.
We haven't had to do any formal challenging today,
and that is good.
The major challenges have been, you know, administrative,
and they've been, you know, like precincts have moved
from one polling location to the next.
People haven't been informed,
so we've been able to act as a catcher's mitt
and kind of help redirect people to where they need to go
and also connect them with transportation services.
Every time we change a polling location, we do a couple of things.
We notify the voter by mail.
We give them a new voter registration card.
We give them a, in the newsletter that we send,
it lets them know where they go and vote,
their polling location, and the like.
And...
We have poll workers on the outside of the old location
to let the voter know this is no longer it.
Back out here live,
I'm joined with two voters who actually showed up here at Bagley
and then were unexpectedly turned away, Natasha and Melissa.
Hi.
Talk to me about your experience.
Yeah, I just walked in, and unfortunately,
I was told I had to go to Montfort.
So, yeah.
At the last minute?
At the last minute.
So you got no notification?
None whatsoever.
So I was here this morning and got told to go to Montfort High School.
Went to Montfort High School,
was told at Montfort, I have to go back to Bagley.
So I was on the bus, number one.
And then for me to have to come back,
this is not a clear communication.
And if you're a first-time voter, that'll discourage you.
Did you get any notification prior
to this that Bagley was not your site?
No, ma'am.
And you called and made a complaint, I understand.
Yes, I called the NAACP as well as Janice Winfrey's office.
All right, now back out here again live.
You know what?
If you do encounter any problems at the poll,
make sure that you call the NAACP.
That number is 313-664-2424.
