I'm at the Boston Marriott Burlington where Mike Minogue
is set to address supporters later tonight.
Minogue was a former medical device company CEO who won the GOP primary
back in September over former MBTA administrator Brian Shortsleeve.
He's challenging Democratic Governor Maura Healey,
who's seeking a second term with Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll.
There's also an independent on the ballot,
former criminal defense attorney Andrea James.
Now, when it comes to lowering costs,
Healey and Minogue have very different plans.
On energy, Minogue would cut utility fees,
expand natural gas and nuclear power, and scrap the net zero mandate.
Healey now backs a southeastern Massachusetts gas pipeline
and has redirected clean energy funding to lower bills.
On housing, Minogue would oppose MBTA Communities Act enforcement
and reward communities for faster permits
and dropping stricter energy codes.
Healy backs multifamily zoning.
transit and more housing construction.
On education, Minogue supports a federal scholarship
tax credit program. Healy is still reviewing it
while pointing to public school and career
training investments. And on immigration,
Minogue would repeal the PROTECT Act and expand federal
cooperation targeting violent criminals and drug dealers.
Healy signed that law saying
its restrictions on immigration enforcement help protect access
to schools, hospitals and
courthouses. Minogue's running mate, Sean Oliver,
suspended his campaign after an OUI arrest.
He would ask Oliver to resign if elected.
We're going to be live in Burlington.
