A clash on campus leaves conservative influencers
attacked by a student.
Now, it could lead to charges.
Fox 2's Jessica Dupak is live in our newsroom
with video of the encounter and just what happened here.
Well, this all played out in front of a lot of cameras, as you said,
Ruth, all at the University of Michigan campus yesterday.
A trio of very conservative influencers.
They were set up with a booth there on campus.
That's when a student walked over, didn't have the same viewpoints,
and that's when it all erupted. Someone was hit in the face
and a young woman, one of those conservative influencers, was tossed.
The man you see that got hit with
the cell phone, that's Joe Redden,
and the woman getting pushed,
that's Liz Beneschlew.
They're both conservative influencers
with a lot of followers on social media.
So they set up booths on campuses similar to what Charlie Kirk did.
They say they're looking for calm dialogue with students.
One of those students didn't like where
the conversation was going about Islam, and it erupted.
Later, the video showed the young woman resisting police
when they tried to arrest her.
She also had some commentary for you as she was getting arrested.
Yeah.
Yeah, she told me that she wishes that she would have killed me.
And then someone had said, you're insane.
You know, you should be in an institution.
She said, I've already been in an institution
and I would gladly go back if it meant I would have killed her.
How's that make you feel?
I don't know. It's terrifying.
So we did reach out to the University of Michigan Police,
the chief deputy chief releasing this
statement saying the student was taken into custody,
processed and released. The incident
has been forwarded to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office
for review. Now you might
be wondering why we blurred the suspect.
That is station policy because she has not been criminally
charged at this point. Now
the conservative influencer you saw there getting pushed,
Liz Beneschlew, she was taken to the hospital to be checked out.
She had some x-rays. She said she's
Really sore, but not seriously hurt reporting live in the newsroom.
Jessica Dupak, Fox 2 News.
Yeah, I mean, Jess, you're a journalist who studies this stuff.
You look at this,
you see online what's going on and it takes root this kind of acrimony,
this kind of distaste for one another and boom,
all of a sudden things like this happen
allegedly in this particular case.
Yeah, and Ruth, there's lots of videos.
We looked at all the different angles
and really the mood was pretty calm. Even Liz there, who we talked to,
said everyone was pretty agreeable for the most part.
Usually things get maybe a little heated,
but it doesn't turn physical like this.
Well, let's hope it doesn't ever for anybody
who's just trying to express themselves politically.
Our Jessica Dupak for us live tonight. Thanks, Jess.
