Russia has sharply increased its purchases of German prosthetics amid the growing number of war veterans who lost limbs. According to Forbes , citing Eurostat, in the first half of 2026, the cost of prosthetic arms and legs from Germany increased 5.4-fold compared to the same pre-war period in 2021. Purchases of artificial joints increased more than sixfold. The increase in spending on German prosthetics and artificial joints directly reflects the sharp increase in the number of seriously wounded Russian soldiers who became disabled during the war with Ukraine.
In just six months, Russia spent €79 million on German prosthetics and artificial joints—almost a third more than the previous year. Germany supplies over half of these supplies from the European Union. The increase in need is also noticeable in terms of the age of patients. According to Rostec, before the full-scale invasion, young people accounted for approximately 8% of those requiring prosthetics, while by 2025, that figure had risen to 15–20%. The state corporation directly linked this change primarily to injuries suffered by those who participated in the war against Ukraine. Russian companies are struggling to meet the demand for complex products. It's particularly difficult to replace imported knee modules and microprocessor-controlled feet. According to Steplife's director, domestic products account for the majority of the market in terms of quantity, but only about a third in terms of value: expensive high-tech components still have to be sourced abroad. The scale of the need is also reflected in government statistics. In 2024, more than 152,000 prosthetic arms and legs were issued in Russia—approximately 50% more than the previous year and the highest number in a decade. After that, the Ministry of Labor stopped publishing information on the number of prosthetic recipients.
Moreover, in 2026, for the first time since the beginning of the war, Russia lost more territory than it occupied.
According to experts, the Russian army has captured approximately 100 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory along the entire front line since the beginning of 2026. Meanwhile, the occupiers lost 122 square kilometers between September 1 and October 16 during the "Vivaldi" campaign. The operation inflicted catastrophic damage on the Russian Federation's 144th Motorized Rifle Division. It suffered such heavy losses that it effectively ceased to exist. "Russia will have to rebuild the 144th Division from scratch if it wants to conduct new offensive operations in the Liman direction. This will place additional strain on Russia's troop replenishment system, which is already facing serious difficulties," ISW notes.
