Drone operators from the Third Assault Corps distinguished themselves in the Luhansk region. During a routine operation, they accidentally spotted a Russian Mi-8, pursued it, and destroyed it. Troika published footage of the Russian aircraft's destruction. The operation was carried out by a SKYFOM strike wing platoon. The troops were on a routine raid on enemy logistics behind enemy lines using Hornet drones. However, they encountered a more interesting target: a Russian Armed Forces helicopter. "The Mi-8 drone flew out to intercept it. The enemy was forced to change course in the air. The helicopter's cruising speed exceeded the attack drones', but as soon as the Russian aircraft landed, the fighters launched an attack near the fuel tanks. A second Hornet successfully secured the target," the corps reported. This helicopter, which the Russian Armed Forces use to transport soldiers, weapons, and other military cargo, burned completely. At the time of the strike, Russian military personnel were present on the Mi-8. There is currently no information on their fate.
Media previously reported that Russian air defense systems shot down their own Mi-8, mistaking it for a Ukrainian drone. The Russian propaganda Telegram channel Fighterbomber reported this, without disclosing the official cause but hinting that it could have been a so-called "friendly fire". The author of the publication noted that he would not disclose the cause of the loss. However, he called it a "classic problem" and stated that no modern innovations, AI, or other means would help solve it. Meanwhile, Ukrainian Telegram channels reported that Russian military personnel may have shot down their own Mi-8. Most likely, Russian air defense crews mistook their helicopter for a Ukrainian drone.
Earlier, a military Mi-8 helicopter crashed in the Voronezh region. The incident occurred in the Anninsky district, approximately 200 km from the Ukrainian border. Preliminary reports indicate that a Russian Aerospace Forces Mi-8 helicopter crashed. All three service members on board did not survive. The circumstances of the incident are currently being kept secret. The Russian Ministry of Defense remains silent.
