A planned six-day ceasefire brokered by U.S. first lady Melania Trump and linked to a humanitarian aid mission in a Russian-occupied town has allowed residents of Kherson to revisit their damaged homes in the so-called “kill zone” on Friday. According to Associated Press the visits came on the fourth day of the ceasefire, which also enabled bus convoys carrying evacuees from Russian-occupied Oleshky to begin the long journey out of the war-ravaged region. Kherson lies just across the Dnipro River from Oleshky. In parts of the city close to the river, constant drone attacks have turned residential neighbourhoods into dangerous “kill zones,” forcing many residents to flee their homes. Sixty-four-year-old Liudmyla Orhovska visited her apartment for the first time since last year. She and her husband moved to a safer location after several heavy attacks near their building. Their former home stands close to the Dnipro River, where Russian FPV drones, artillery and glide bombs strike daily. “You have to go somewhere to buy groceries and the center, then run home somehow, and the drones are just a safari in Kherson on people,” Orhovska said. In a neighbouring building, Oleksandr Knyha, director of the Kherson theatre, used the pause in fighting to collect belongings from his daughter's apartment. He packed paintings she had collected around the world, along with a refrigerator and washing machine. “This silence is strange because we are used to explosions. We fall asleep to explosions, we wake up to explosions, so this silence stresses us out. All the people who live here will tell you the same thing,” Knyha said. Fifty-eight-year-old Anatolii Skorubskyi has continued living in one of Kherson's most dangerous neighbourhoods throughout Russia's full-scale invasion. He said that without a ceasefire, he hears drones buzzing every few minutes and constantly seeks shelter to survive. The windows and door of his home have been blown out. "I jump out between drones when there are no drones, I ride my bike, if it flies, I hide, then I continue riding, the drone flies, I hide again. And so on for 5 years,” Skorubskyi said.
