A humanitarian evacuation mission in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, in Ukraine’s Kherson region, has concluded, with 750 people evacuated from the city, according to US First Lady Melania Trump, who helped mediate the operation. Residents who chose to return to Ukrainian-controlled territory were flown from Anapa Airport in Russia’s Krasnodar region to Gomel, Belarus, aboard Russian Aerospace Forces military transport aircraft. Ukrainian Human Rights Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets accompanied the evacuees. A third aircraft carrying evacuees has already arrived in Belarus, according to the Ukrainian news outlet Focus. The next stage of the journey will take them to the Novaya Huta border crossing, where they will be able to return to Ukraine. Their pets are also being evacuated alongside them. Footage from the operation showed cats and dogs being transported in cages and carriers. According to Trump, 25 buses carrying a total of 750 people departed Oleshky. Russia’s Human Rights Commissioner, Yana Lantratova, cited the same figure. At the Crimean city of Armyansk, evacuees were divided into groups travelling to Ukraine and Russia. Russian military blogger Romanov initially reported on Telegram that 17 buses were transporting residents to Ukraine, compared with four heading to Russia. He later edited his post, removing the figures.
The ceasefire, which has reportedly remained in effect without violations since October 27, was established following appeals by Pope Leo XIV and Melania Trump. On October 29, Lubinets arrived in Anapa, marking the first official visit by a Ukrainian official to Russia since the start of Moscow’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Explaining his decision to travel to Russia in person, the Ukrainian ombudsman said: “When it comes to saving people, it is important to be there.”
