At least four people have been killed after a tornado ripped through a construction site in Antalya, southern Turkey, tearing apart workers’ accommodation containers and hurling five construction workers out of the structures. The tornado struck the Fevzi Çakmak neighbourhood, where the workers were staying in two containers. According to authorities, the violent winds shattered the structures and threw all five workers inside them. Two workers died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries after being taken to hospital. The fifth worker was injured but was reported to be in good condition. Emergency medical teams, police officers and firefighters rushed to the site following reports of the incident. Teams from Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority also joined the response as authorities began inspecting the area to determine whether anyone else had been injured or killed. Drone footage of the aftermath showed construction materials and metal formwork scattered across the site, with the crane damaged and debris strewn across the surrounding area. Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin visited the scene and confirmed that the tornado had also toppled a crane at the construction site. However, he stressed that its collapse had not caused any additional casualties and was not responsible for the deaths and injuries among the workers. Şahin described the incident as an unusual natural phenomenon, noting that no other tornadoes or storms had been reported elsewhere in the city and that nearby buildings had not suffered comparable damage. The Turkish State Meteorological Service had issued a yellow-code warning for heavy rainfall in Antalya, cautioning that adverse weather conditions could continue across the region. Authorities continued inspections at the construction site as emergency crews worked to assess the full extent of the damage and establish whether there were any further casualties.
