One region of the world has become the most dangerous for merchant mariners, and it's not the Strait of Hormuz. According to the Financial Times, more sailors have died in the Black Sea this year than in any other body of water, surpassing the number of fatalities in the Persian Gulf.
The Black Sea, a vital corridor for grain and Russian oil shipments, poses a greater risk to ships than the Middle East, according to shipowners and maritime organizations.
"Crews of oil tankers, cargo ships, and grain carriers entering the Black Sea near EU and NATO territory are forced to battle through a barrage of attacks from drones, missiles, and explosive-laden boats as Russia and Ukraine intensify their fight for control of this vital shipping route. By some estimates, the number of attacks in the Black Sea is more than six times higher than in the Persian Gulf," the publication analyzes. In particular, the Chairman of the Trade Union of Maritime Transport Workers of Ukraine, Oleg Grigoryuk, stated:
"In my opinion, sailing the Black Sea and calling at Ukrainian ports is practically suicidal. The general feeling is that life is constantly at risk." According to maritime security company Ambrey and the International Maritime Organization, more than 570 vessels have been attacked in the Black Sea this year, resulting in the deaths of 40 sailors. By comparison, 24 fatalities were reported in the Strait of Hormuz. It is noted that some vessels were caught in crossfire during port shelling, while others were deliberately targeted. According to Ambrey, there were an average of more than four attacks per day in the third quarter.
"The situation is simply unbelievable. In my opinion, every attack on a vessel is an attack with the intent to kill... If a residential area is hit twice in the same place, the intent is to kill," said Salvatore Adorno, deputy shore manager for Sicilship, which operates the Wine Trader.
At the same time, Romanian President Nicusor Dan accused Russia of escalating the war on the border of NATO territory.
"Since the onset of Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Black Sea has been a high-risk region for commercial shipping. These waters were mined early in the conflict, and despite the lull in tensions during the UN-brokered grain export agreement with Turkey, which collapsed in 2023, Russia continues to shell Ukrainian ports," the FT noted. Security analysts believe that attacks from both sides have become even more deadly for crews, given that Ukraine has begun to adopt Russian tactics.
"Previously, Ukraine would target the loading manifold or disable the engine room or wheelhouse. Now, like Russia, they are attacking the bridges and living quarters [of ships], which could lead to an increase in crew casualties," emphasized Thomas Alexa, a senior analyst at Ambrey. Ukraine has rerouted grain through smaller ports on the Danube, but the minister noted that it is impossible to fully utilize the capacity of these facilities, as they are constantly under attack.
"Russia is also rerouting grain via significantly more expensive routes through the Baltic Sea and from Vladivostok in the Far East. According to satellite monitoring data from ship broker IFCHOR Galbraiths, shipments from Black Sea ports and the neighboring Sea of Azov totaled 201,000 tonnes in September, a sixth of the previous month's level," the Financial Times reports.
