F-16 fighters are actively and quite effectively shooting down Russian jet-powered drones in Ukrainian skies , as Ukraine suffers from a shortage of defenses. In some attacks, the fighters shoot down up to 90 percent of the jet-powered drones. However, as The New York Times reports , constant patrols are depleting the fighters' resources.

According to the publication, Ukraine has approximately 50 fighters of this type in service. And, the newspaper writes, they "are in the air so frequently that there is a risk of their breakdown." The authors cited retired US Air Force Lieutenant General David Deptul, who directs the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies, as saying that such use of F-16s means that Ukrainian forces are "consuming limited resources faster than they should."

He added that such a solution is unsustainable in the long term. He also pointed out that every F-16 sortie in pursuit of a drone means one less fighter sortie for offensive missions. The publication noted that the Ukrainian pilot training program is much more focused on counter-drone missions than previously. Just five years ago, before Russia's war against Ukraine, pilots were given far less training in this area. One pilot, who trained at air bases in Canada and Romania, said that during his training alone, the nature of combat "has completely changed almost 10 times." Fetești Air Base in southeastern Romania is the only base outside the United States where Ukrainian pilots fly F-16s. The program at Fetești is managed by Lockheed, and training lasts approximately six months, often followed by more than a year of English language instruction and mastery of less powerful Western fighters. It is unknown how many pilots have completed training there, but at least 19 have since September 2024. As a reminder, last week, Romanian F-16 fighter jets shot down two drones over the country's territorial waters. According to the Romanian Ministry of Defense, the targets were "Geranium-class jet-powered attack drones."
