Ukraine is discovering new vulnerabilities in the Russian army, forcing it to withdraw its air force as far from the front as possible and lose resources without which it cannot mount an offensive.
Modernized Neptune missiles can now strike targets hundreds of kilometers away, and strikes on fuel infrastructure pose a threat to the Kremlin that cannot be eliminated by simply redeploying equipment.
In an interview with Channel 24, Ukrainian Army Reserve Colonel, pilot instructor, and military expert Roman Svitan explained why the destruction of Russian aircraft could change the tempo of air attacks, which target could inflict an even more devastating blow on Russian aviation, and how the destruction of the oil refining industry could impact the occupiers' offensive capabilities. The expert also assessed whether Ukraine could continue long-range strikes if American support is curtailed.
The successful strike on the Borisoglebsk military airfield in the Voronezh region, which destroyed six Russian Su-34M fighter-bombers, demonstrated a new level of capability for the Ukrainian military-industrial complex.
The Russians withdrew their tactical aircraft 500 kilometers from the line of contact, considering this distance safe. Previously, the aircraft were based in Baltimore, near Voronezh, but after the arrival of ATACMS missiles, Russian command first transferred them to Engels and then returned them closer to Borisoglebsk.
However, Ukrainian forces used modernized land-based Neptune cruise missiles. This missile was originally developed by the Luch Design Bureau as an anti-ship missile, but its range has now been increased to 500 kilometers thanks to conformal tanks, allowing it to deliver a warhead weighing over 100 kilograms.
Russian air defense at the airfield was prepared only for drone attacks, so a salvo of four Neptune missiles reached the parking lot of heavy aircraft without hindrance, as they could not be quickly dispersed.
The loss of six Su-34s represents a 6% loss of Russia's total fleet of approximately 100 such aircraft. Now, the Russian command will be forced to redeploy the remaining aircraft to Engels Airfield, located 700 kilometers from the front.
This will radically change the enemy's logistics: the flight time with bombs will increase to 1.5–2 hours, and the number of sorties per shift will be reduced by at least 50% to 50%. Furthermore, this will lead to accelerated wear and tear on aircraft assets and an increase in unscheduled munitions failures.
The next logical step would be to target Engels itself, where strategic aircrafts like Tu-95s, Tu-160s are based and tens of thousands of tons of aviation kerosene are stored in karst caves. An explosion of such an arsenal would have catastrophic consequences for the entire base.
In parallel with the airstrikes, the systematic destruction of the Russian oil refining industry continues. This is the only means of defeating this resource-intensive country. Currently, approximately half of Russia's oil refineries have been damaged: a third are idle, and another third are undergoing repairs.
