Ukraine is developing specialized drones with artificial intelligence that could be used to enhance air attacks on Russian territory. This is a larger-scale campaign in which Ukrainian forces could threaten Russian airports by evading air defense systems, according to journalist Simon Schuster in The Atlantic.

According to the author, Ukrainian forces have struck at least four Russian data centers since October 8. Furthermore, last week, Russian authorities were forced to cancel 345 flights from Moscow airports due to the threat of drone attacks. Two Ukrainian air campaign developers interviewed by the journalist stated that what is happening is only the beginning. As Shuster notes, until now, Ukraine has used long-range drones primarily to threaten Russian airspace near airports, forcing authorities to restrict flights. However, no direct strikes have been carried out on the airports themselves.

In one incident over the weekend, debris from a downed Ukrainian drone reportedly fell on the grounds of Sochi Airport, causing a fire in an administrative building.

"According to the plan's developers, a more ambitious version involves using drones controlled by artificial intelligence to evade Russian air defenses and strike airports in Moscow and other cities," Shuster writes.

One of the initiative's authors reported that Ukrainian manufacturers plan to significantly increase production of such drones in the near future.

The author of the article also notes the position of US President Donald Trump. Despite his intervention in the issue of Russian diesel fuel supplies, the American leader has not publicly commented on the recent attacks on Russian airports and data centers.

Earlier, when Trump called on Zelensky to stop striking Russian oil refineries, he softened his stance, admitting the possibility of attacks on other targets.

"There are many other goals there," the American president said at the time.

At the same time, following the launch of Ukraine's Operation M&M's last month, Russia has intensified its shelling of Ukrainian cities. According to Shuster, Russian troops have begun regularly launching daytime strikes on residential high-rise buildings, schools, and other educational institutions.

The journalist believes that further escalation puts Kyiv before a difficult choice: Russia is capable of responding to Ukrainian actions with even more brutal attacks, and Trump's role in resolving the war, in his opinion, has changed.

"No matter what new weapons and tactics Ukraine employs, Russia can always respond with greater brutality. Trump no longer seems interested in ending this wave of violence. He has shifted his stance from mediator between warring parties to dealmaker with the Russians, leaving Zelenskyy with a stark choice: accept Trump and Putin's demands to end the war on Russia's terms, or find new ways to continue the fight, with or without American support," the article states. According to Shuster, Ukrainian officials first presented the M&M's plan to Zelenskyy in early 2026. At the time, the president deemed it too risky.

The initial concept envisioned launching up to a thousand drones daily toward Moscow airports. Such a tactic could have permanently paralyzed civilian air traffic in the Russian capital.
