Ukraine likely used British-made naval drones to strike the Russian port of Sochi last month, according to an article in The Times , whose journalists analyzed videos that appeared online.
There, they identified the K3 Scout, a high-speed drone built by Kraken Technology in Hampshire, England. Video shows one of the drones exploding before reaching its target. An industry source reported that it was "one of many that arrived at the harbor."
During the operation, the Russian supply vessel "Nefrit," moored at the pier, was damaged. Ukrainian military officials stated at the time that it was a multipurpose vessel, part of Russia's maritime and energy infrastructure. It supported oil and gas operations, serviced offshore facilities, transported cargo and personnel, and performed underwater engineering work. The authors noted that such drone operations once again demonstrate how the nature of warfare has changed. An industry source also added that this demonstrates the continued support of Ukraine's allies in the UK. "British industry is a key pillar in the fight against Russian aggression, and we support cooperation in this effort," the source told the publication.
It is also known that Ukrainian troops used British long-range drones for the first time to strike military and industrial targets deep inside Russian territory in August. These autonomous boats have a range of 650 nautical miles. They can be dropped from a helicopter and serve as launch pads for hundreds of armed drones. They deliver kamikaze drones or compact air defense systems over long distances at a speed of 55 knots on the high seas.
Depending on the mission, they can remain at sea for up to 30 days and carry a payload of up to 600 kg. Each boat costs relatively little – around 300,000 euros. As a reminder, a fire broke out in the Sochi seaport on September 3. Monitoring channels reported attacks by unmanned boats .
Later, the Ukrainian Navy reported a successful attack on the Russian support vessel "Nefrit." The Ukrainian Navy emphasized that the vessel's activities directly supported the enemy's military operations and financed aggression against Ukraine.
