Moscow’s airports temporarily suspended arrivals and departures on Friday evening, October 16, according to a representative of Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency. As of 10:40 p.m. local time on Friday, the “Carpet” plan, a security measure restricting aircraft movements, had been introduced at three of the Russian capital’s four airports: Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky. All three airports had temporarily suspended arrivals and departures.
Restrictions on Moscow’s air traffic have been imposed several times in recent days in response to drone attacks or air-raid alerts, with some suspensions lasting several hours. Similar restrictions were introduced on Thursday, October 15. In response to the repeated disruptions, Russia’s Transport Ministry and Federal Air Transport Agency have placed civil aviation operations in the Moscow region under special monitoring. Videos shared on social media show passengers stranded at Russian airports amid the disruption, with some forced to sleep inside terminals while waiting for their flights. Footage from Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport shows passengers facing prolonged delays, with one traveler saying she had been unable to leave Russia for the third consecutive day. Another passenger reported being unable to depart for the second consecutive day, saying their flight had still not left Moscow. Separate footage from Kazan Airport also shows passengers stranded amid the disruption.
At 9 p.m., Sheremetyevo Airport’s press service reported that the situation inside its terminals remained calm and that all airport systems were operating normally. However, Sheremetyevo also suspended flight operations at 2 a.m. on Saturday.
