Ukrainian attacks on the data centers of tech giant Yandex have led to chaos and daily hell in key areas of everyday life in Russia and disrupted key traditional services in Russia, the FT writes . One Muscovite, who wished to remain anonymous, said she can no longer use the free wheelchair-accessible Yandex taxi service she uses to take her 10-year-old disabled son to school .
For two days, they had to travel by metro, with numerous transfers and virtually no elevators or ramps. The word "chaos" isn't an exaggeration, but the reality of Russia, whose tech ecosystem is centered around a single, massive company closely tied to the state. Launched in 1997 as a search engine, Yandex has become Russia's answer to Google, Uber, Amazon, and OpenAI, all rolled into one. In some cities, timetables disappeared from electronic signs at bus stops. In Moscow's residential complexes, barriers stopped opening: the company servicing them also relied on Yandex infrastructure. In 2014, following Putin's claims that the internet was a "CIA project" in which "everything goes through servers in the US," the state required Russian companies to store all customer personal data within the country. Yandex became a key player and was finally acquired in 2024 by a consortium closely tied to the president. The consequences for Russia were far more serious, exposing the vulnerabilities created by the Kremlin's long-standing policy of centralization and control over the IT sector. Many of these efforts centered around Yandex, which was forcibly sold in 2024 to investors associated with President Vladimir Putin. Russia has become a victim of its own policies… This has led to the worst-case scenario, stated Alena Epifanova, a research fellow at the German Council on Foreign Relations.
It was also reported that Russians are unable to withdraw hundreds of billions of rubles from Yandex Bank. A young Russian man recorded a video explaining that he had been keeping all his money in Yandex Bank and was now effectively left without a livelihood. He complained that he really disliked Vladimir Putin's "action" and longed for a normal, quiet life.
"Yandex Bank, what are you doing? What are you doing? I have all my money on Yandex, and I don't understand what to do... What am I supposed to say at the store? 'Give me free food—Yandex will pay for me later'? Or what? I can't use my own hard-earned money. Who's going to compensate me? Or who's going to let me stay overnight for free? What is this? What kind of trend is this? I understand why this is happening; it's 100% because I want to 'get going.' I don't want to get going! I want to sleep, eat, earn money, and then use it. And even that's not allowed anymore," the young man said. Yandex Bank and Yandex Pay customers are filing complaints to the Central Bank of Russia and the prosecutor's office, reporting their inability to withdraw funds and asking for a timeline for a resolution. Yandex support is blocking customers who are asking for clarification and inquiring about the risk of bankruptcy. It's worth noting that Russians hold over 350 billion rubles in Yandex Bank accounts. The bank lured clients by offering high interest rates by Russian standards. Whether they will get their money back remains questionable, as Ukraine is actively destroying the company's data centers.
