Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and other Portugal national team stars are appearing in an advertisement for the Chinese company Changan Automobile, whose pickup trucks the Russian army uses to launch attack drones in Ukraine. Slidstvo reports that the vehicles featured in the advertising campaign include a Hunter —the same model journalists spotted in Russian military videos. Changan's website features five national team players above five cars under the slogan "Stay in the game!" The advertisement is part of a sponsorship agreement signed with the Portuguese Football Federation in May 2026.

The advertising poster, in addition to Ronaldo, also features current players of the Portugal national football team. 1. Joao Felix 2. Bruno Fernandes 3. Bernardo Silva 4. Rafael Leao. The Hunter is portrayed in a completely different role in a July video by Russian propagandist Vladimir Solovyov. Soldiers assemble and equip drones, including the Geran, and then launch them from a speeding pickup truck. This isn't the first recorded instance of such vehicles being used by Russian forces. In January 2025, Ramzan Kadyrov announced the deployment of five armored Changan pickup trucks to the war. Since the onset of its full-scale invasion, the Chinese manufacturer has expanded its presence in Russia. According to industry research group Inovev, the company has increased exports, replacing departing European and American automakers. Journalists asked Changan for comment on the use of pickup trucks to launch attack drones, but received no response. The Portuguese Football Federation responded that the sponsorship agreement had undergone a "rigorous" compliance check. Earlier, the European Union confirmed reports of Russian soldiers training in China. Radio Liberty reports this, citing an unnamed high-ranking European official. According to him, the relevant data was verified and confirmed by the relevant EU structures. A source told journalists that hundreds of Russian military personnel had undergone training in China. The training took place at several training bases in China. Some of these soldiers were then directly involved in the war against Ukraine. The official added that this practice differs from previously known forms of interaction between Moscow and Beijing, which were usually associated with economic cooperation, technology supplies, or dual-use goods. The issue of China's role in supporting Russia is planned to be discussed at the meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, which will take place on June 15. EU foreign ministers are expected to discuss security issues, the European defense industry's dependence on Chinese supplies, and possible forms of support for Russia from Beijing. The topic of cooperation between Russia and China remains one of the key issues in relations between Brussels and Beijing amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
