The Trump administration is considering using the GBU-43/B MOAB, a high-explosive aerial bomb known as the "mother of all bombs," against Iran. Its use is part of plans to launch strikes against Iran, which would give the United States a formal pretext to declare an end to the protracted conflict. However, the use of such weapons is unlikely to reduce tensions in the Middle East: Tehran continues to claim the partially blockaded Strait of Hormuz.

CNN sources reported that Trump and his closest advisers had been discussing scenarios for several months that could help end the war with Iran. According to them, the US president ordered the military to develop radically new options for striking Iranian targets, which would encompass "a significant portion of the country's energy infrastructure."

These options involve the use of the GBU-43/B bomb, primarily to destroy ground infrastructure in Iran, cripple the energy industry, and exert psychological pressure. CNN sources suggest that the "Mother of All Bombs" could also be dropped on some of Iran's new nuclear facilities.

The GBU-43/B is considered the largest bomb in the US arsenal. According to CNN, the MOAB weighs over 9.5 tons, making it the most powerful non-nuclear bomb in the US military's arsenal. The network notes that the effectiveness of using this munition to achieve Trump's stated strategic goals is questionable, but such a move would represent a significant escalation of the conflict between the US and Iran.

It's extremely effective for "clearing" territory—destroying exposed missile sites, equipment hangars, supply depots, and personnel over large areas. However, it's generally believed that the "mother of all bombs" may be useless for the deep underground infrastructure for which the Iranian nuclear industry is renowned. The bomb is equipped with special sensors that detonate before it hits the ground—approximately a couple of meters below the surface. The developers did this deliberately, so that the full force of the explosion wouldn't be absorbed into the ground, but would instead spread outward as a destructive shock wave.

"It's a mass information operations weapon, great for clearing large areas, but nothing more," one source told CNN. "It's certainly not designed for deep underground penetration."

During the 2025 and 2026 US bombing campaigns against Iran, the GBU-57 A/B Multi-Op Possible bomb was used, but it differs from the GBU-43/B. The GBU-57 A/B is designed for the targeted destruction of underground facilities: its ultra-strong body penetrates soil and reinforced concrete, detonating deep underground to destroy bunker fortifications. Because Iran's key nuclear facilities were specially constructed in tunnels inside rock, conventional aircraft and standard missiles were unable to damage them. It was to overcome this defense that the US deployed the GBU-57 A/B. The primary targets were the Fordow uranium enrichment facility and the underground facility in Natanz.

"We must ensure that Iran does not have nuclear weapons or even the hope of developing such weapons in the future," Donald Trump emphasized at a rally in Arizona. The US President added that before the current military operation against Iran, he thought fuel prices would rise much more than they actually did. "We haven't had to pay the highest price. I thought fuel prices would be much higher," Trump noted, once again promising that the Iranian conflict would soon end.
