German Skyranger 35 anti-aircraft artillery systems have long been in service with the Ukrainian Armed Forces , protecting Ukrainian skies. The first official video featuring the latest system was released by the 1020th Anti-Aircraft Missile and Artillery Regiment of the Ukrainian Air Force. This was highlighted by Defense Express experts.
The footage shows the system itself, as well as the moment it hit an air target. Experts noted that the very fact of the public demonstration of the weapons means that a certain number of Skyrangers 35 were transferred to Ukraine in secret and without unnecessary publicity.
"Although the video was released today, September 3, it was obviously filmed no later than March 2026. This is indicated by the lack of leaves on the trees and the warm uniforms worn by the anti-aircraft gunners," Defense Express noted.
According to Skyranger 35's commander, call sign Timati, who clarified that his unit was "one of the first" to receive this anti-aircraft gun, experts concluded that Skyranger 35 was not alone at the time the video was recorded. "Therefore, the information released by some specialized channels tracking the flow of defense aid from Germany to Ukraine, that as of the summer of 2026, the Ukrainian Armed Forces had not yet received these systems, turned out to be false," the report states.
Experts recalled that the Skyranger 35 is a 35mm anti-aircraft artillery system, which, in the Ukrainian version, is mounted on the Leopard 1 tank chassis. According to them, it was the chassis that was repaired and modernized. Specifically, in one of the shots, they noted that the vehicle had been equipped with several modern electronic control systems.
"There's also footage from the vehicle's fighting compartment showing the destruction of an aerial target. Although this sequence lasts only a few seconds, the system's high rate of fire and the operation of the digital fire control system with automatic target tracking are clearly visible," Defense Express writes.
As analysts noted, targets such as drones and cruise missiles are destroyed by 35x228mm projectiles with a programmable fuse, and the KDG 35 cannon can fire at a rate of up to 1,000 rounds per minute. Effective fire can be delivered to a range of up to 4,000 meters.
"Overall, Ukraine is expected to receive a significant number of these systems. Rheinmetall announced in October 2025 that the contract for the supply of additional Skyranger 35s to Ukraine is valued at hundreds of millions of euros. Meanwhile, Germany is keeping the quantity and delivery timeline secret," Defense Express noted.
