Germany is preparing to deliver new air defense assistance to Ukraine this month as Kyiv confronts an intensifying Russian drone campaign, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelen-skiy said Wednesday. Zelenskiy made the announcement following a phone conversation with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, saying Berlin had committed to providing addi-tional air defense packages in September. “There will be new air defense packages from Germany this month,” Zelenskyy noted, highlighting the urgency of strengthening Ukraine’s defenses amid a sharp rise in Russian aerial attacks. The announcement comes after Russia significantly escalated its use of drones against Ukraine. Russian forces reportedly launched around 1,500 drones over a four-day period at the end of August, including approximately 800 jet-powered Shahed-type attack drones. The scale of the barrage has placed further strain on Ukraine’s already heavily tested air defense network. Kyiv is particularly con-cerned about the approaching autumn and winter seasons, when Russia has repeatedly inten-sified strikes against Ukraine’s energy system and other critical infrastructure. During their conversation, Zelenskiy and Merz also discussed an attempted Russian attack involving an explosive-laden drone at a strategic airport in Leipzig, Germany. Merz informed the Ukrain-ian president about measures Berlin had taken following the incident. Zelenskyy, mean-while, offered Ukraine’s assistance and expertise in countering drone threats, drawing on the country’s extensive battlefield experience after more than four years of full-scale Russian aggression. Germany has remained one of Ukraine’s most important air defense partners since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Berlin has supplied Kyiv with advanced systems including Patriot and IRIS-T air defense platforms, which have played a key role in protecting Ukrainian cities and infrastructure from Russian missile and drone at-tacks. The two leaders also discussed progress on a planned German-Ukrainian “Drone Deal.” According to Zelenskiy, teams from both countries are working to finalize the agreement, which is intended to expand cooperation in drone manufacturing and strengthen the defense capabilities of both nations. The planned partnership could allow Germany to benefit from Ukraine’s extensive experi-ence in developing and deploying drones under combat conditions, while giving Kyiv access to additional industrial and technological resources. The initiative comes as Germany and other European countries increasingly seek to expand domestic drone capabilities and incor-porate lessons learned from the war in Ukraine. Zelenskiy and Merz also agreed to hold an in-person meeting, although no date was immediately announced. Berlin’s latest pledge comes as Ukraine braces for another potentially difficult autumn and winter. With Russia increasingly relying on large-scale drone waves designed to overwhelm Ukrainian air de-fenses, Kyiv is seeking additional Western systems and ammunition to protect population centers, energy infrastructure and military facilities from sustained aerial attacks.
