Russia has entered a deadly new phase in its war against Ukraine by deliberately targeting the country's railway network: the latest strikes on Kyiv killed six employees, The Guardian reports.
Ukraine's state-owned railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia, reported that its employees were killed when a ballistic missile struck a locomotive depot. Russian forces struck other railway facilities during a massive bombing campaign in Kyiv and the Kyiv region. At least 12 people were killed and dozens were injured, including three children.
It is noted that the brutal attack occurred amid an escalation of Russian attacks on the Ukrainian capital. Beginning last week, they conducted six days of continuous raids, attempting to disrupt daily life and demoralize the city's residents. The attack occurred just hours before Ukrainian children began the new school year. Since Russia's full-scale invasion, 58 railway workers have been killed and at least 318 wounded. Ukraine's railway network is the third largest in Europe, with 24,000 kilometers of track. It became a lifeline for the country's civilian population during the war, transporting four million people and approximately 120,000 livestock.
Serhiy Leshchenko, a member of the Ukrzaliznytsia Supervisory Board, called the railway "the backbone of Ukraine's economy." It was the primary logistics provider for the country's military and industry, transporting 600,000 people weekly. It was Ukraine's largest company, employing 170,000 people. According to him, for these reasons, Russia is trying to destroy the railways. In the first year of the war, it attacked bridges that could easily be replaced. Then it struck railways and electrical substations. Then Ukraine switched to diesel engines. According to him, this year Russia began "direct attacks on civilian locomotives" – a devious tactic at a time when Ukraine lacks air defense capabilities. Leshchenko said that if a Shahed drone comes within 50 km of a train, it will have to be evacuated, and travel will only be possible once the threat has passed. In total, Russia has been caught in the net more than 1,500 times this year—more than in all of 2025. A total of 249 train cars and 492 locomotives have been damaged.
Trains, once renowned for their punctuality, are now regularly delayed, sometimes by 12 to 15 hours. Air raid sirens force passengers to disembark and take shelter, even in winter. Ukrainian journalist Tatyana Zayets described how she hid while Russian drones flew overhead:
"It was hell. The train stopped at night somewhere in central Ukraine. I don't even know the name of the city. Half asleep, I only heard the conductor say 'evacuation.' We took only personal belongings and valuables. It was raining outside. Thank goodness the conductors handed out blankets. We held out like that for two hours. While kamikaze drones buzzed overhead, we crawled under a freight car. The last car of the train was full of children. They were being transported from the hospital. They were crying in their sleep. I thought I was in a horror movie. But no, this is our life."
Last week, an enemy drone crashed into a train in the Odessa region carrying 600 people, including 15 children.
