Things just took a DEVASTATING turn...
Sep 1, 2026
Things just took a devastating turn in Minnesota as GM Bill Guerin was on a radio show and talked
about the Quinn Hughes extension and it has a lot of fans fired up and a lot of fans are not happy
with what he had to say. So we're going to break it all down for you guys coming up on this episode
of NHL Digest. You're not going to want to miss it because this is crazy but before we dive into all
that just want to say we're on the road for 20,000 subscribers here on the channel before the season
starts so if you're new here you want to stay up to date on the latest news around the NHL we are

so and yes you heard it right Bill Guerin said some crazy comments in this interview today a lot
of fans online listened to this interview me myself and I kind of formed the opinion that
everyone online has been saying is that he sounds defeated when talking about the Quinn Hughes
extension it just seems like the writing is on the wall for Quinn Hughes the extension to not get
done they're still trying to figure it out and he basically said it isn't about the number at all
here so let's dive into everything he had to say about today the first thing he had to say was
actually pretty good you know we had to talk about the relationship between him and Quinn he says the
only thing I can say is we have a great relationship with Quinn the team me personally and I have a
great relationship with his agent things are going well we are taking our talking all the time there's
good communication these things take time in June July and most of August there's really no pressure
and I have to agree with uh with Guerin there is that yeah there's no way over the summer there
isn't any pressure at all when it comes into September which we are into now that's when
things start to ramp up try to get deals done before that September 16th deadline so that they
can potentially sign him to an eight-year deal I don't think that's where we're going right now it
seems like from what we're going to talk about today that he most likely will be traded out of
Minnesota if not before the season during the season and I know a lot of Minnesota Wild fans
are very unhappy about that but I do want to talk about his extension number uh these are some
potential contracts that I do see him signing with the Wild if it's a shorter term deal that's what
I'm thinking I don't think he wants to sign long term here I do think at some point in his career
he wants to play with his brothers so signing a three by eighteen million dollar deal uh would be
good for Quinn Hughes because then he signs back with the Wild they have a chance to go win a Stanley
Cup uh and you know at the end of the day at the end of those three years he can go play with his
brothers signing for agency with the New Jersey Devils and that that will be it right but if he
does see fit that he wants to stay here long term an eight by twenty deal is what I'm looking at
here's the second best defenseman uh in the league the best defenseman in the league just went for
what was it 20.4 million dollars a year uh so taking a couple thousand hundred thousand bucks
off of that that year that's what you're going to get uh at Quinn Hughes at I think don't think
he's going to want to take any less than that on a long-term deal seeing what Kael McCurr just did
and I know in him his mind he probably thinks he is the best defenseman in the league
and between him it's it's a it's definitely Kael ahead of him in my opinion but I do think that he
is definitely around that ballpark that Kael is in no doubt about it but let's to get back into
more of these comments here what he had to say uh some interesting things on this podcast where
the podcast host asked him to take a pledge uh that if the Wild are unable to get a contract
extension for Quinn Hughes you and you had to trade him you will resign as GM and then
Garen and then when Garen is told you can't trade Quinn he then says jokingly I can do whatever I
want a very interesting uh quote here uh on this podcast because basically the the host was trying
to get a clip I'm I'm gonna say that uh just saying you know if you have to trade him you
have to sign you know if you trade him you had to resign trying to make him to take that pledge
he didn't take that pledge and then said jokingly I had to add that in there because it wasn't like
you know uh you know stern answer he said jokingly like yeah you know I can do whatever I want and
he's not wrong he can do whatever he wants he's the GM of the team if he sees fit that it's best
for the organization to trade this player he will trade this player but if he can get a deal done
he'll be happy to keep him they have a great relationship we just heard so a very interesting
a quote there I do think a lot of people are reading more into this uh than what is out there
uh but I do think that uh you know if you listen to this clip he definitely said this jokingly I
can do whatever you want it wasn't just like a a power trip at all I think was just a very
jokingly way uh but I can see how out of contest out of context it would look pretty bad here but
let's keep going on because he did have some more stuff to say here about Quinn Hughes he said
there's a bar with Kale McCarr signing that contract in Colorado but Quinn might be after
different things he's a different guy he has different personality and is different things
in his life that are important to him he knows what he's gonna want in the end so looking at
these comments he's kind of just saying hey it's not really the the contract number it seems like
the number and contract is on the table it's just really up to Quinn on what he wants to do
and at this point in his career he's made his money uh he obviously is looking for a new
contract but if you kind of read between the lines here it kind of seems to me what Bill
Guerin is saying he he does say in this interview that he's the only one on the inside and knows
what's going on it kind of seems like he's alluding to the fact that Quinn really wants to
play with his brothers and the way to do that is getting traded to New Jersey and I really do
believe that that is where this is going I think you know he he enjoyed his time you know with the
Minnesota Wild we've seen it recently uh where you know Mika Rantanen had that um you know short
stint uh within Carolina and then went to Dallas so maybe we're seeing this too with Quinn Hughes
where it's kind of a rental for last year uh where they you know they got him trying to win the
Stanley Cup they ultimately didn't get to their goal but now he's kind of seeing how much fun his
brothers are having in New Jersey wants to join that culture wants to join this team and when you
read between the lines in this interview kind of it really does seem to me that that is what
Quinn Hughes wants and I know a lot of people online are taking this and running with it
and I don't think they're too far off because I mean you think about it I know a lot of you guys
probably have brothers if your brothers were playing at the top level of hockey that you were
at you would want to play with them at some point in your career we see it you know we see it every
day you know uh with you know obviously the Ruck brothers because just getting drafted the Sadeen
brothers playing their whole careers together and more you know we just seen the Foligno brothers
reunite in Minnesota so it really makes sense to me that these these they all just want to play
together and that's what it kind of seems like they're alluding to in this video and then he also
goes on to say there this is a user on Twitter has to talk about this quote that was said that
we talked about he said he's got a different a lot of different things in life just what we just
talked about this Twitter user says it sounds a lot like a lot like Jim Rutherford did right
before he traded them and I know if there's any Vancouver Canucks fans watching this they know
what I'm talking about because before Quinn Hughes was traded to Minnesota Jim Rutherford at the
time when he was when they were trying to figure out what to do with Quinn Hughes was really talking
about this it's what he wants in life is what you know it's it's almost verbatim what he was saying
before they traded him so Minnesota Wall of Fans I feel for you because you went out gave up a lot
to get this player in your organization and now just a full season later we're talking about him
being on the move again and it really does seem like it's coming to that for me and that's why
I'm saying it's taking a devastating turn because unfortunately we're seeing a lot of it in the NHL
right now players you know wanting to do what they want to do you know it really sucks and I know it
fans I know they will get a good haul and return here and like I said the trade destination here
is definitely the New Jersey Devils right like I don't think there's any other team that he would
go to over the Minnesota Wild I think he's comfortable in the position he is right now
he will he would sign a contract here if he did not want to go play with his brothers Luke and
Jack in New Jersey and if we look at a trade that we could see for Quinn Hughes I think this is
something that would entice Minnesota to trade him away and that is Nico Heischer who they just
locked up long term and three first round picks to bring in Quinn Hughes because if you look at
this you know New Jersey obviously they have Jack Hughes they have Nico Heischer Jack Hughes right
now playing second line center but they really do have true two one line centers at first line
centers in their organization so if they get rid of Nico Heischer Jack Hughes slides up to the top
line they bring in an elite defenseman like Quinn Hughes who can orchestrate their power play
it just makes sense right for this team to make a trade for a superstar defenseman if it wasn't
Quinn Hughes right like but where is Quinn you have that chemistry of all three brothers on your team
and definitely makes them a better team for the Minnesota Wild on the other hand I do think that
obviously losing Quinn Hughes is a major loss but bringing in a great two-way center would be a good
replacement then you also have three first round picks to work with that you can go out and trade
for other stars around the league and try to fill that hole that way as well I know wild fans this
is not what you want to hear if I was a wild fan right now this is not what I'd want to hear either
but unfortunately it seems like from what Bill Guerin said on this radio interview
it seems like the writing is on the wall for a trade for Quinn Hughes to New Jersey but I'll
hear your guys thoughts down below do you think I'm reading too much into it do you think
maybe this is just you know he's not going to be traded do you think he's going to sign
what do you think he's going to sign for let me know your thoughts on this whole situation
down below in the comment section I'd love to hear from you guys down there if you enjoyed
