This is EXACTLY What the Red Wings Needed...
Oct 15, 2026
This is exactly what
the Detroit Red Wings needed after month after month of disaster
and disaster.
Really, since this offseason started,
nothing has went right for this team.
In fact, you can probably go back to the trade deadline
when they traded for Justin Falk.
It's been just mistake after mistake,
and finally, they have a big win to talk about.
I appreciate you Detroit Red Wings fans who tune into these videos.
I know the past I can't even remember how many videos I've done
on Detroit have been pretty rough but
we're going to be positive on this one
and then I'll end off with some questions on what comes
next because that big win was bringing back Alex
DeBrincat right uh in the previous videos
talking about the Detroit Red Wings there
were three big questions that Horkoff had to answer
and all of them heavily impact the future of this team
and I think that the DeBrincat one was the
one looming the most right because there
was the most you could potentially lose right with the
player in the last season of their contract there's
a risk of injury right um there's talks
of are you going to trade this player what can you get typically
when you trade a guy as a free
agent you get pennies on the dollar right
so there's questions on where you're going to be
able to bring him in how much that costs now we have those answers
and I'm personally if I was a
Red Wings fan I'd be very comfortable
with these answers I feel a lot better about the future of
this team it also tells me uh that it's very unlikely
the Red Wings are going in the full
rebuild direction right because you already have
your franchise defenseman inside right you have
your star wingers right you're gonna have
to make some changes right probably when you trade Dylan
Larkin as we'll mention in this video right you're gonna have
to find some new centers maybe you can
get a high pick depending on how the season's going
not off to a great start but now you have
some stability here to really focus on the rest
of these decisions even though Edmonton isn't
with the team and I would say this is definitely
the next highest priority for the team I felt like
in the sense that this situation with the Brinkat
was the highest priority because that's the
asset that you can lose right even
though this Edmonton thing isn't pretty right Edmonton
isn't going anywhere he has nowhere to go it's kind
of what makes this whole i don't even want
to call it a holdout i guess it is a holdout
at this point i guess what makes it so interesting
but we'll start here by going into the Brinkat contract
and then talk about how it impacts
Detroit's salary cap because honestly uh some
people will talk about oh overpay honestly i
I think it's a fair contract anyway,
but you look at how much money Detroit has
It makes a ton of sense that you got it done for this amount of money
because this is not going to impact this team at all.
We got the breakdown of the contract from the Detroit Red Wings,
and yeah, I got to imagine the admin
of this Twitter was really excited to post a win.
They've had a couple rough months, you know.
They posted Dylan Larkin's birthday.
I have to show the videos of pretty much the fans booing him
Hasn't been a good start for the team, as we'll talk about as well
but the Brinkat staying home it's
a seven-year contract worth 13 million dollars per year um get
the sticker shock out of the way i understand
Connor McDavid's making 12 this is a ton of money
this is going to be the price of high impact scores in the NHL
and the good thing with this
contract when we've seen a lot of players get money
that you don't quite know what they are
de Brincat absolutely is one of the best scorers
in the NHL there really is not much
debating that you take a look at what his stats
were uh last season 85 points 41 goals right
finally clips that 40 goal mark
and he's a guy that's just consistent when it comes to that
scoring right he's such a good fit for the power play
and also i think produces better 5 on 5 than he
gets credit for uh if there is one knock
on his game i guess you can say he could be better
defensively but even
then i think he's average defensively i don't think you're having any
major issues on defense when it comes to Alex DeBrincat
and this is a player that you want
to bring back right he's 28 years old
so pretty much you look at this contract seven years you're
pretty much getting all the prime and this ends
when he's 35 you expect him to be able to score
assuming health all the way through this contract
and it's not like he just had a career year last
year yes last year was an incredible season
but it wasn't as high in terms of points and he's hit
even though 41 goals is his career high he's done
this a couple times now where he had 41
last season had 41 with his last season
with the Blackhawks he's steadily gotten better for the Red
Wings I believe every single season I misspoke there it
was his career high in points but even
though we'll see what happens in terms of point
and he's off to a good start right now with
eight points in six games well I don't know
if he'll regularly hit that 85 point mark I am
confident he'll be in that 35 to 40 goal range uh you saw
the Rangers pay Pavel Dorofeyev 11 million
dollars i think the Brinkat
is a significantly better player than Pavel Dorofeyev right i think
he's more money to score those goals every single season he has more
of a playmaking elements right
so you consider all these crazy contracts going out i don't think
this is crazy at all right
the contracts gonna keep going higher you got him locked in long term
and i think for Detroit it's
a huge win that you got that seven year contract
because even though he's going to be getting older
by the end of that right you have his entire prime
and it's these contracts just to continue
to balloon right so every single year
the salary cap continues to go up right now we now know for
the next three years at least it's going
to continue to go up 10 million dollars and this
is a good move for Detroit it allows you
to breathe a bit as a Detroit fan you're looking
at this season at one point where especially
now you don't know what's gonna happen with
Edmondson, you don't want to have a Larkin
Everybody's making those trade rumors, having Alex Brinkat in them
You don't want to see that
This can allow you to breathe a little bit.
What it's not going to do is change the standings very much right now.
Detroit has had a tough time, and I don't see that getting better,
at least until you get Edmondson back
Honestly, I don't know if Edmondson fixes all this
This might take a little bit with Detroit,
and there's a lot of noise in this locker room,
which is another reason why I think this is a huge win,
to get people to stop talking about Brinkat
as well right they'll still be talking about
they'll still be talking about Larkin
but it'll get a little bit quieter and for the players
on the team at least now you know he's gonna
be back there's a little bit more certainty on like
what this team is going to be in the future
because while i do think this will end up being
a lost season i think if detroit handles
this correctly this can be a one-off season and this
doesn't become a five-year six-year rebuild
which at some point i feel like we were talking about
this summer it got to that point but this year
so far they have four points in uh they played
five games so it's like six games
so far um only one win they do play the flyers in their next
game so we talk about potential wins right there
that's a big one you don't want to be the first
team in the nhl to lose to the flyers
and while i i'm sorry flyers fan i kind of want to see how
far this streak can go at this point
so I'm definitely rooting for Detroit in this one the
other thing that comes to mind
when it comes to this contract for Dubinsky though is what does
it mean for Edvinson and what comes next
and I do think Edvinson is pretty much the only thing
Detroit can do to really fix the standings a little bit I
do think well I don't think he will change
everything I do think he can kind of slow the beating
and bring this team closer to what they
were last year and the division did get better I
do think they are due to be the last place team
in the specific division but let's take a quick look
at their salary cap situation for next season
which is why i say i think this can be a one-off
and i will note too for fans of free agency who
want to see big splashes uh today is a terrible day
because uh the brink hat was in my opinion
the most likely guy to hit the market that would offer
a big splash of course you have your quinn
hughes you know the devil's link we'll probably talk about
that again at some point especially
with the Devils' poor start, I think that kind of changes
stuff a little bit, right? Not the
worst start, but 6.6 games,
not exactly what you're hoping for.
Kucherov is also technically
going to be available. We don't think he's going to leave
Tampa, right? If this does leave at this point,
Jared McCann is being the most likely big
free agent guy, which is a huge step
down, obviously,
from the burn cap, but Detroit fans
don't want to hear that, right? You don't want your team to leave
your team. For you, this is a huge win, and
honestly, I like to see when players decide to
stick around with the teams they're currently
at and battle it out right as opposed to Larkin who
just he's had enough of this team
but looking at next season the reason why I think this really
can be a one-off you look
at the cap space projected 46 million dollars that is a ton of
money worth noting this season they
do have 15 million dollars this contract doesn't kick into
next year so you don't really wonder what it's going
to take for Edmondson it seems like they
have all the resources to get this done keep
in mind too yes there are some contracts they need
to figure out for next season
but you look at it some of the biggest names that don't have
contracts are you have uh your young guys like casper
and then you have contracts uh you need
you need a goaltender right both your goaltenders expire
at the end of the season Gibson is the one
in particular either you want to bring him back
or likely find an upgrade and again you have your
goalies in the system so even that's
not something you probably expect to spend a ton of money on
if you're the Detroit Red Wings
then after that the other player that is worth noting is you have
Falk and Copp so neither guys
who are going to absolutely break the bank so this is a Detroit
team that does have a lot of space
which is really why I question what is the holdup at this point
with Edmonton right because before I
was wondering oh maybe Horkoff just he's not able to give
really big contracts but we have this update tweet here
and I kind of want to go through this uh
we're talking about the Red Wings uh interim GM Steve Yzerman
and um with this contract it does
feel at least maybe ownership just really cared much about uh
to bring cap but does show that he
has some authority to sign these big contracts
and what he had to say in Edmonton was I have
zero interest in trading Edmonton
and I want to keep him home nothing has changed on my part I
think Simon is someone that's very hard to come
by we spent a lot of time developing him we drafted
him he's a player that we value here that I value especially
and I know that everyone in that locker
room does as well so it's not something I'm entertaining we want
to sign home sign up sign
simon sorry islanders slip there and hopefully get that done
and this quote is nice right obviously
he's a player they really value my question
then is what's the hold up right because you have the
40 million dollars you're not going to spend
that 40 million dollars and we just talked about free
agency you couldn't spend that 40 million dollars if you try
so even if he is asking for say a
million or two million too much what's the big deal at this point
and i understand right there's
elements that you don't want to completely overpay for this player
but if your organizational line
is at nine million dollars and he's asking for eleven
and a half at this point is it not just
better to sign that contract let me know what you think
in the comments below and let me know what
you think about that to break that deal
do you disagree do you think it's an overpay i i can't
see how especially again looking at detroit's salary
and how desperate they were for a win
did you get a discount on this deal no did you need one
no not really you just need to get this
deal done I do think this makes Detroit
a better team next year right obviously instead of starting
over but I'd love to know your thoughts
on this and yeah if you have not already be sure to

that's gonna do for this episode of NHL Digest
