The Financial Times reports that the war has reached Putin's beloved Black Sea resorts , including the Sochi and Gelendzhik regions, long associated with the Kremlin leader's vacations. Air raid sirens, drone interceptions, fires, fuel oil and oil spills in the water, and queues for gasoline have become part of the summer season for many Russians on the Black Sea coast. 322 days have passed since Putin's last trip to Sochi . The FT notes that the threat also scared off the most famous vacationer – Putin. He has an official residence in Sochi, as well as a luxurious palace, allegedly built for him near Gelendzhik. According to the Kremlin website, Putin visited Sochi 24 times in 2021, but only twice in 2024 and 2025. He last appeared publicly in Sochi in October last year, after which he mainly remained in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and his residence in Valdai.
Before the parliamentary elections, Putin intensified his regional travels, but most of his visits were to the east of the Urals—out of range of Ukrainian drones: he is afraid to travel there. The Black Sea coast remains one of the most popular vacation spots in Russia, but it is also home to refineries, oil terminals, and other infrastructure that are becoming targets for Ukrainian attacks. The Ukrainian Armed Forces claim they are striking exclusively military and energy facilities, and that drones that crash in civilian areas were intercepted by air defenses or electronic warfare systems before reaching their targets. According to Dmitry Bogdanov, chairman of the expert council of the AMOS Hoteliers Association, amid drones flying overhead and oil spills in the water, the number of tourists has fallen by 10.8% compared to last year. A tourist boat captain in Arkhipo-Osipovka told the FT that sirens used to be rarely used, but now they sound several times a day. Meanwhile, vacationers often remain indifferent to the alarms, and few seek shelter. Alexey, a manager from Voronezh, told the FT that he traveled to Sochi in June with his young daughter. Due to water pollution and drone attacks, they avoided the sea and swam in the hotel pool. The trip was far from ideal, but he says he had little choice: his employer is now part of the military-industrial complex, meaning, like many Russians, he is banned from traveling abroad.
