What does Israel actually want from the new Syria?

A revealing Wall Street Journal article titled “The New Syria: The Enemy of Israel’s Enemy” argues that Ahmed al-Sharaa may not be Israel’s friend. Still, his rise in Damascus presents Israel with a major strategic opportunity against Iran and its Lebanese ally.

What makes the argument particularly significant is its author: Or Horvitz, a former lieutenant colonel in Israeli Defense Intelligence who headed its Hezbollah and Lebanon branch and later served as a senior adviser to the director of Israeli military intelligence.

In this analysis, Kevork Almassian examines what Horvitz’s argument reveals about Israel’s strategy toward post-Assad Syria.

The collapse of the former Syrian government removed one of Iran’s most important regional allies, disrupted Hezbollah’s logistical depth and fundamentally changed Syria’s geopolitical orientation. Horvitz argues that Israel should exploit the new reality rather than view Damascus exclusively as an enemy.

The proposal goes further.

Israel should support mechanisms along the Syrian-Lebanese border aimed at preventing Hezbollah’s rearmament, while Western powers could help train and support designated Syrian and Lebanese units against weapons-smuggling networks. Horvitz also sees potential for limited Israeli-Syrian cooperation under American mediation.
