Ukrainian drone units have acquired a powerful new battlefield tool: high-tech satellite imagery that provides information on troop movements and locations in near real time. According to The New York Times , this is a game-changer for Ukraine.

A year ago, delivering satellite imagery to the front lines could take several days due to less sophisticated technology and a multi-layered command structure. This made it difficult to engage targets that could change location with long-range drone strikes.

"The rapid delivery of high-quality satellite imagery to frontline troops has been a key battlefield achievement over the past year, allowing Ukraine to rapidly strike weapons depots, logistics centers, and troop camps deep inside Russian-controlled territory, as well as within Russia itself," the article notes. In some cases, frontline troops can control the satellites themselves, quickly analyzing imagery for targets and then firing. Rapid satellite imagery also helps them verify which targets have been hit and fire again if necessary.

"Troops still require approval from more experienced commanders to strike targets, reducing the risk of errors by less experienced pilots. But now that process has been significantly streamlined," the NYT writes.

Thanks to this instrument, Ukraine, among other things, intensified attacks on occupied Crimea, which destroyed ferry terminals necessary for Russia to supply the peninsula, as well as logistics routes.

Drones have become the most effective way to kill or cripple adversaries. However, the technology is less effective when it comes to detecting them. Surveillance drones can be shot down or their signals jammed. Their range is limited, as is the physical area they can cover. Until recently, only senior commanders had access to satellite imagery for high-level strategic planning.

However, last year, this access expanded significantly thanks to the US government and private companies. Vantor, Ukraine's commercial partner, recently launched six new satellites, bringing its total to ten. Its satellites can now cover up to seven million square kilometers of the planet daily, enough to scan the Ukrainian battlefield multiple times, said Will Kokos, the company's Chief Transformation Officer.

Satellites can provide images of the same area up to 15 times a day, helping soldiers spot subtle changes in terrain that could indicate possible Russian targets.

Furthermore, images can be obtained in just 15 minutes, whereas it typically takes several hours. However, this is a huge improvement over the recent past, when it sometimes took days.

"Basically, we hand them the satellite," Kokos said. "They tell it what to film."

Commercial satellite companies maintain vast archives of imagery, allowing field commanders to study subtle changes in the environment—footprints in a field, fallen trees, recently cleared land—that might indicate a hidden target. "Overall, it looks like a revolution in military technology," said Robert Tollust, a military expert at the Royal United Services Institute, a think tank in London.
