Thanks to sanctions imposed back in 2014, a number of man-made accidents are already occurring in Russia, although Ukraine has not even begun to strike at the Russian energy sector .
Military expert Sergei Grabsky spoke about this on the "News Factory" program , noting that even strikes by the Defense Forces on Russian transformers could lead to blackouts in Russia this winter.
"When a transformer is hit, no one extinguishes it within 72 hours. After all, that's 3 to 5 tons of oil that needs to burn out. Water won't help. The oil will float. Foam, especially in winter, is a problem. Covering it with earth is also incredibly difficult," he noted. The expert added that Ukraine can survive in fairly low temperatures by using alternative energy sources and the climate at our latitude.
"In Ukraine, it's already -5 to -7°C—that's quite low, so imagine what would happen if transformers in the Russian Federation failed," Grabsky said.
He added that average winter temperatures in Russia can range from -20°C to -30°C. And if a transformer burns for three days and then requires repairs for another week, this could lead to critical consequences.
"What's a week without power? What will happen to the sewer and water supply systems, which are already barely functioning?" the expert noted.
He explained that the unique feature of Ukraine's power grid is that it was designed specifically for use during a nuclear war. It is quite dense and flexible, which cannot be said about the specific needs of power supply in the Russian hinterland.
"No one will strike Moscow. There's no point. But destroying transformers is a trivial task for today's Ukrainian army. And an attempt to cut off our power supply would be mirrored against the Russian Federation, with a far more dire outcome," Grabsky added.
He also noted that such strikes would not be a problem for Ukraine. This is evidenced by the fact that a Ukrainian Flamingo cruise missile has already been spotted several hundred kilometers from the line of contact.
"What is a 'Flamingo'? I call it a wartime product. It's a relatively quiet aerial target, using an engine from an old aircraft. Consequently, its speed is low. And its appearance reminds me of something the Soviet Union once used to train air defense crews. Speaking of the Ukrainian situation, take any statistics on cruise missiles, and you'll see that rarely does a cruise missile even reach Kyiv. Why? Because Ukraine has been quite actively using aircraft against these missiles lately," Grabsky said.
Against this background, he noted that the appearance of the Flamingo at a distance of more than 500–600 km from the border indicates problems in the Russian air defense system.
"Up to 400 km is contested airspace, where Russian aircraft operate cautiously to avoid being destroyed. But beyond 500–600 km, what's so difficult about shooting down a slow-moving target that anyone can film? It's the detail of its movements. The Russian Federation has what's called a 'focal air defense,' which isn't capable of protecting all important facilities," Grabsky explained.
