Russian occupiers continue to experiment with new technological innovations to resume the use of heavy armored vehicles on the front lines, according to analysts from the Institute for the Study of War .
It is noted that Russia is installing modernized anti-UAV systems on its tanks to extend the service life of armored vehicles on the front lines. Specifically, an attempt at such an attack was recorded on August 7, when a Ukrainian drone struck a Russian T-72B3M equipped with the Arena-M system near Dobropillia.
In July, the enemy also attempted to use armored vehicles to break through Ukrainian positions in this area, deploying seven to nine tanks and two armored fighting vehicles. At that time, the Defense Forces also destroyed at least one tank equipped with the Arena-M system. Analysts note that this system was originally designed to protect armored vehicles from missiles, shells, and mines. However, in 2025, it was upgraded to counter UAVs. Ukrainian military officials told experts that during one such attack, the Arena-M system intercepted seven Ukrainian FPV drones. This means the Defense Forces need to use more drones to destroy a single tank.
Experts believe this system is unlikely to be effective against Ukrainian FPV drones, as it is easily overloaded. At the same time, it could complicate the destruction of armored vehicles for the Ukrainian Defense Forces. It is noted that this system can carry 12 anti-drone munitions, which would be sufficient given the drone density on the frontline between 2023 and 2025. However, this number is currently insufficient for comprehensive anti-drone defense.
As a reminder, in July, paratroopers from the 81st Separate Airmobile Brigade of the 7th Corps of the Ukrainian Airborne Assault Forces reported Russia's attempt to use armored vehicles for assaults near Dobropillya. At the time, it was reported that the Russians used 28 motorcycles, a tank, three infantry fighting vehicles, seven vehicles, and over 50 troops for the attack . It was reported that Ukrainian defenders stopped the Russians before they could even reach the first line of defense.
The Rubezh Brigade also reported that Russia would likely continue to use military equipment to break through in the Dobropillya area. It was noted that the Russians' goal here is to advance directly to the city. However, despite constant assaults, the enemy is failing to achieve its objectives. In particular, the Rubezh Brigade's forces are promptly identifying and eliminating the enemy before they reach Ukrainian positions. "The occupiers' primary goal remains advancing toward Dobropillia. The enemy is concentrating its efforts in this direction, but has so far been unable to realize its intentions," the statement noted. At the same time, it is reported that this week, the brigade's servicemen were involved in repelling a large-scale mechanized assault on the enemy, which was successfully thwarted by forces of the 1st Corps of the Azov National Guard and related units.
In particular, during the battle, the brigade's fighters destroyed one armored combat vehicle, an MTU-72 bridge-laying vehicle, and also took part in the destruction of other enemy equipment.
