The Russian propaganda machine has encountered yet another embarrassment in its attempt to demonstrate Vladimir Putin's "deep involvement" in the military operations in Ukraine by forcing a non-living soldier to report to Putin. The Institute for the Study of War writes about this .
The Kremlin released an audio recording and transcript of a telephone conversation in which the dictator allegedly received a report from the commander of the 76th Guards Airborne Assault Division. The voice on the recording identified himself as Colonel Shikhabidov and enthusiastically reported on the alleged capture of Pokrovsk, Grishino, Novoalexandrovka, and advances in the Dobropolsky direction.
However, an investigation by ISW analysts and reports from independent sources revealed a shocking fact: Colonel Abdulaziz Shikhabidov, with whom the Kremlin leader allegedly communicated, died back in May 2025. In his native Dagestan, memorial events have long been held in schools in honor of the fallen officer, and the actual division commander is listed as an entirely different person—Denis Shishov.
In addition to the obvious fabrication of the participant in the conversation, the "phantom colonel" touted successes to Putin that were completely detached from reality. ISW analysts emphasize that the Kremlin's stated pace of advancement and city captures are physically impossible given the current dynamics of the fighting. Although Russian troops made minor advances in the Pokrovsky and Dobropillya districts in July 2026, this pace completely rules out the possibility of achieving Putin's stated objective of capturing the rest of the Donetsk region by December 31. ISW believes this production points to two key factors. First, the Russian high military command is systematically misinforming Putin, creating a virtual picture of "continuous victories." Second, the dictator's direct attempts to contact mid-level commanders are generating absurd fabrications, demonstrating the Russian leadership's complete disconnect from the real situation on the front lines.
Recall, Kremlin has dramatically increased the personal security around President Vladimir Putin, installing surveillance systems in the homes of close staffers as part of new measures prompted by a wave of assassinations of top Russian military figures and fears of a coup, according to a report from a European intelligence agency obtained. Cooks, bodyguards and photographers who work with the president are also banned from traveling on public transport, the dossier says. Visitors to the Kremlin chief must be screened twice, and those working close to him can only use phones without internet access, it adds. Some of the measures were put in place in recent months in the wake of the killing of a top general in December, which sparked a dispute in the top ranks of Russia’s security establishment, the report says. They suggest mounting unease within the Kremlin as it faces growing problems at home and abroad, including economic woes, increasing signs of dissent and setbacks on the battlefield in Ukraine.
