Ukraine destroys air defense systems guarding "Putin's Palace"; new drone strikes

Ukrainian drones struck a missile site for an S-400 Triumph anti-aircraft missile system used to protect one of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's residences from long-range attacks, The Telegraph reports.
The launch pad is located approximately 19 km from the Russian president's Italian-style palace complex near Gelendzhik in southern Russia. This air defense system is used in conjunction with electronic warfare systems and mobile fire teams to protect the palace, which is surrounded by a 43.5-square-kilometer "buffer zone." Security forces maintain a permanent no-fly zone over the complex.
The residence near Gelendzhik, known as “Putin’s Palace”, may have set the Russian president back as much as £1bn, according to an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Foundation led by Alexei Navalny, the late opposition leader, in 2021. Navalny died in a Siberian prison in 2024. Journalists claimed that the luxurious complex housed a casino, vineyard, spa, ice rink, theatre, pole-dancing room, hookah lounge, “aquatic disco”, miniature railway room and more. In 2023, it was reported that a chapel had been added. An attack in the same region last week led to Ukrainian drone fragments falling on a beach, killing seven bathers.
Putin is believed to rarely visit this Black Sea estate, fearing strikes from long-range Ukrainian drones and increasingly favoring his well-fortified luxury dacha on Lake Valdai. The dacha is protected by at least 27 turrets mounted with Pantsir anti-aircraft systems, which cost approximately £16 million each.
Analysts said Moscow had turned to these systems to intensify its missile attacks on Ukraine because of a critical shortage of the Patriot interceptors that form its sole defence against ballistic barrages.
“While less accurate and lethal, they still represent a threat to civilian infrastructure, particularly when launched at densely populated areas,” wrote Fabian Hoffmann, a missile expert at the University of Oslo.
As reported, on August 9, an S-400 position was hit in the Russian city of Gelendzhik , which had launched six missiles on August 8. Also on the night of August 9, four other enemy air defense elements on Russian territory were destroyed: an S-400 Triumph SAM system position – Gelendzhik, Krasnodar Krai, Russian Federation – the 413th Separate SBS Regiment "Reid"; a TOR SAM system – Pudovy, Rostov Oblast, Russian Federation – 1 Separate SBS Center; a Pantsir-S1 anti-aircraft missile and gun system – Yeysk, Krasnodar Krai, Russian Federation – 1 Separate SBS Center; a Podlet-K1 radar station – Golovatovka, Rostov Oblast, Russian Federation – 1 Separate SBS Center, etc.
