By intensifying attacks on Crimea, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are seeking to isolate the peninsula, annexed by Russia, from the mainland as much as possible, Deutsche Welle reports.
The publication noted that they are using long-range drones to attack vehicles on the M-14 highway between Rostov-on-Don and Melitopol, as well as ships of the Russian "shadow fleet" in the Azov and Black Seas.
In addition, energy facilities serving military needs are subject to attacks. The article notes that power outages are lasting the longest in northern Crimea. One resident, Ivan, told the publication that for some time, fuel was unavailable for purchase, either with coupons or in cash – the only exceptions were police officers, government employees, and medical workers.
It is added that most stores are not selling perishable goods because their refrigerators and freezers are out of order.
"There are no dairy products, no fish, no meat. Only a few stores have power generators, but the prices there are much higher than before," Ivan said.
The publication reported that assistance is being provided by small private volunteer initiatives that deliver drinking water to people suffering from power outages, as well as to hospitals and kindergartens.
Social media also reports that residents of northern Crimea, due to the lack of communication and power outages, are now sending their mail by scheduled buses. However, the publication notes that these buses are no longer running regularly. The publication explained that Ukraine's attempts to block supply routes to Crimea are primarily aimed at small Russian tankers and tugboats delivering oil to larger vessels, as well as fuel to Crimea. Substations are also being destroyed.
Brovdi told the publication that Ukraine is deliberately not affecting the Kerch Bridge, which connects the peninsula across the Kerch Strait with Russia's Krasnodar Krai.
In an interview with British journalist Caolan Robertson, Brovdy noted that the road and railway bridges must remain intact to serve as an evacuation corridor from Crimea.
"The point isn't to destroy them, but to cut off Russian troops from supplies. We want to make it impossible for the Russian military machine to remain and conduct operations in this region," he explained.
Military expert Ivan Kirichevsky, who serves in the drone unit, explained to the publication the importance of air strikes on Crimea for the ground front.
"To prevent the Russians from even getting close to Zaporizhia, pressure must be exerted on their supply lines in the occupied southern part of Ukraine. This applies primarily to Crimea. The blockade of shipping in the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea essentially serves the same purpose. Crimea has long served the Russians as a safe haven and an unsinkable aircraft carrier from which to launch their offensives in southern Ukraine," he noted.
According to Sidharth Kaushal of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) in London, attacks on power plants do not necessarily violate international law.
"Especially if these objects have military significance and the attacks comply with the principle of proportionality," the article notes.
It is clarified that Ukrainian experts confirm that the objects that were attacked primarily supply electricity to military installations.
"I apologize to the residents of Crimea, the Ukrainians, for the current inconvenience. They are experiencing limitations on the benefits they've enjoyed their entire lives – electricity, water, and communications. But they are no worse off than the residents of Kharkiv, Dnipro, Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, Nikopol, Kherson, and hundreds of other cities that are subjected to targeted attacks daily," Brovdi said, calling on citizens to be patient.
